Winter Soldier #2 Review by (July 22, 2019)

Review: An intense tale of a boy trained to be a ruthless killer and another ex-ruthless killer's attempt to get through to him. Nicely done though I hope this whole series isn't just to give Bucky Barnes a kid sidekick.

Comments: First full appearance of RJ. In place of the cover logo, there is a black banner that reads “Stan Lee, 1922-2018.” Issue includes a brief tribute to Stan. Tony Stark's entire role is on the other end of a telephone call.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Winter Soldier #2 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

In a New Jersey diner two years ago, Mr Colt ordered a large breakfast for himself and nothing for his young protege. Colt tells the boy that only when a talented person lives up to potential is he worthy of love. The boy is good at killing; Colt shows him photos of some failed killers and says they are going to make him better than them. Colt hands the kid a knife and sends to to kill the two men in the back booth if he wants to eat. He commits the deed and returns, bloody, to the table; because he was sloppy, Colt swipes the food off the table and forces the boy to eat off the floor. We see that among the failed killers in the photos is the Winter Soldier....

Now in a Wisconsin bar, the boy, dressed as Bucky Barnes, stands over the wounded Winter Soldier and prepares to kill him with a machete; the waitress conks the kid on the head with a coffee pot and when he turns, Bucky is on him, hurling them both through the window onto the street. There is a scuffle, the kid hurls a tear gas bomb then attacks with the machete which is made from Vibranium as it cuts into Bucky's bionic arm. Bucky then uses the exposed electronics in his arm to deliver a serious shock to the kid....

The boy awakens on the back of Bucky's bike as they head for somewhere safe. Bucky tries talking to the kid, who turns out to be part of Hydra, asking him if he likes killing, trying to get through to him. Unknown to Bucky, the kid activates a transmitter in his tooth. Further down the road, the white-clad Mr Colt places a spiked trap across the road; Bucky runs into it, blowing his tires and causing a crash. Colt, bearing a nunchaku in each hand, attacks Bucky, ridiculing him as has-been. Colt tells his protege this was his last test and he failed; Bucky confronts him and the villain shoots down the kid and Buck. The latter seizes a burning nunchaku and sets Colt's clothes aflame, giving him the opportunity to beat the Hydra killer to a pulp. Bucky calls Tony Stark for help; at this the boy finally tells Bucky his name: RJ....
