Tony Stark a rebel in 2 eras

June 26, 2017
The Secret Empire bandwagon keeps trundling on as Peter Silvestro brings us SE: UNDERGROUND. Following on from SE#4 the Tony Stark AI's team leave Ultron in the Arctic to gain another Cosmic Cube fragment in the Savage Land (in the Antarctic).

My contribution to Dark Reign this week is just some updated comments for IRON MAN (2008) #8-13 as Shellhead goes on the run from Norman Osborn's forces.

And T Vernon's IRON MAN (1968) #235 is the opening of a 2-parter featuring Grey Gargoyle turning terrified women into stone statues. This was published as slasher movies were passing their high point.

Incredible Hulk (1968 series) #175

Incredible Hulk (1968 series) #175

May 1974
By Librarian: The idea to shoot Hulk into space to prevent the man monster from destroying it all, which originated the Planet Hulk saga (2006), is not new, and was first used in this very issue written by Roy Thomas (1974). Then, the order was given by Black Bolt, who also (coincidentally?) happened to be among those who decided to shoot the Hulk into space in the mid 2000s...

Invincible Iron Man (1968 series) #236

Invincible Iron Man (1968 series) #236

November 1988
By T: Comments: Part two of two parts. First appearance of Tony's housekeeper Mrs Fruitbagel, whose only later appearances are in issues #244 and 249. Two women on a boat call for Rick and Ajay—possibly the main characters from the TV series SIMON & SIMON?

The Mighty Thor (2015 series) #20

The Mighty Thor (2015 series) #20

June 2017
By Peter: Comments: Origin of the new Ultimate Thor/War Thor/Volstagg Thor. The cover is a homage to THOR #337 by Simonson. The usual team of Russell Dauterman and Matthew Wilson did pages 1, 9-12, 18; Valerio Schiti and Veronica Gandini produced pages 2-8, 13-20.

Captain America: Steve Rogers #18

Captain America: Steve Rogers #18

June 2017
By Peter: Comments: SECRET EMPIRE tie-in: Issue takes place after the Sub-Mariner's appearance in SECRET EMPIRE #4 but he ponders the events leading up to that moment. The scene depicted on the cover does not take place in the issue, not even metaphorically. Donny Cates is listed as co-writer.

Secret Empire: Underground #1

Secret Empire: Underground #1

June 2017
By Peter: Comments: Story follows SECRET EMPIRE #4.

Review: Well, this was a pleasant surprise. In the midst of the dark and heavy-handed SECRET EMPIRE event, we have a bit of humor. More than a bit: the characters bicker constantly among themselves and with the bad guys. A welcome oasis in the desert of grim.

Invincible Iron Man (1968 series) #235

Invincible Iron Man (1968 series) #235

October 1988
By T: Comments: Part one of two parts. There's a joke about Alan Alda, in 1988 the epitome of the sensitive man.

Review: A highly entertaining issue though the cover promises to include more action than it delivers—but hey, that's how to sell comic books. Shellhead testing the new security system, irrelevant to the plot, supplies the only action scene and it looks spectacular on the printed page.

Avengers (2016 series) #8

Avengers (2016 series) #8

June 2017
By Rob: The previously page of this issue lists Iron Doom as an Avenger. Similarly last issue's cover said that he was taking control of the team. But both appear to be wrong. The truth is more like:- last issue the Avengers helped Doom, and this issue *he* helps *them*. This rates him at most as an ally.

In the mini-series Cassandra mostly siphoned the life from ordinary folks. But in #4.

Captain America: Sam Wilson #23

Captain America: Sam Wilson #23

June 2017
By Peter: Comments: SECRET EMPIRE tie-in: issue takes place between SECRET EMPIRE #3 and 4. Dennis “D-Man” Dunphy lived with the Night People in Zerotown in CAPTAIN AMERICA #410-440 (at least). Revelation: Mole Man is a big fan of THE LEFTOVERS and FARGO (until it was canceled by order of Hydra). PS the cover incident does not appear in the story.

Invincible Iron Man (1968 series) #234

Invincible Iron Man (1968 series) #234

September 1988
By T: Comments: Spidey's appearance falls between AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #304-305. Radioactive Man was introduced in JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #93 as a Thor villain but has faced a number of heroes since. Security chief Vic Martinelli was last seen working for Stane in issue #199. Donna Twain gets a big intro but this is her only comics appearance. First appearance of Kathy Dare's dog Puggins.

Mighty Avengers, The #21

Mighty Avengers, The #21

January 2009
By Rob: This story will last 3 issues and the covers are linked to give 1 large image of the whole team.

#23 will reveal that this isn't really Scarlet Witch. Her real return will be in Avengers: Children's Crusade where the possibility will be raised that the version Beast and Hawkeye met earlier (Endangered Species backups in X-titles and New Avengers #26) was a robot created by Dr Doom.
