Thor (1998 series) #19 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

So the three Enchanters stand around looking at the giant magic dragon which has swallowed Thor and Odin whole and congratulating themselves. Inside, Thor and Odin are coping with the acidic bile up to their kneecaps and huge leeches nipping at them and it seems the lining of the beast’s belly is impervious to their weapons. Then Scarlet Witch arrives and offers to help. Odin rebuffs her as a mortal until she points out that their magic cannot free them from their predicament but her chaos magic will prevail. They bring her (and the readers) up to speed on the history of the Enchanters and Ceranda then Wanda makes her plans to escape….

Mephisto is sitting on his throne in Hell when Loki arrives, asking permission to speak to a mortal under Mephisto’s charge. The surly Mephisto grants it and Loki approaches the shade of the real Jake Olson….

Around the time the Enchanters decide that Thor and Odin have been digested and their wrath fulfilled, the heroes burst out of the dragon’s side and challenge the bad guys. Wanda works her magic and the combatants are sent off elsewhere: Scarlet Witch versus Magnir, Odin versus Brona, and Thor versus Enrakt. Magnir seizes Wanda who causes him to sink into he ground to be trapped. Odin punches Brona until his armor is shattered. Enrakt steals Mjolnir and prepares to unleash the anti-force against Thor but instead it rebounds on Enrakt, courtesy of the Scarlet Witch. Thor retrieves the hammer and beats Enrakt to a pulp, knocking him through a mountain. Thor then prepares to take his life but Odin and Wanda appear and stop him, telling him to remove the villain’s helmet. Thor does and is stunned to find that Enrakt is Ceranda, his sorceress lover, who died in his arms….

Back at the hospital, Jane Foster tells Brady O’Neil that Jake Olson saved his life and she can’t believe he’s guilty of the crimes he is accused of. Demitrius Collins grudgingly agrees, having worked alongside him as part of the investigation. Jane and Collins leave O’Neil to ponder the matter. Then Jake Olson enters and tries to smother O’Neil with a pillow….

Review / Commentaries

Thor (1998 series) #19 Review by (August 20, 2025)

Review: So we get some satisfying battles with the baddies with a twist that one of them is Thor’s former one-issue-stand gal pal. And there’s a twist to the Jake Olson plot though bad Jake is likely the original employed by Loki or something. They’ll sort it out in a few issues so we can move on. And the new artist Michael Ryan is good but lacks the solid qualities JRJR brought to the comic, giving everyone heft and gravitas.

Comments: Part six of seven parts. Thor met Ceranda in THOR ANNUAL 1999. Issue #20 reveals that the colorist is Wilson Ramos, not Gregory Wright, incorrectly credited. The lettering is split between Richard Starkings, Comicraft, and Wes Abbott. Issue includes “Bullpen Bits #27” by Chris Giarusso, a brief humor bit featuring Spider-Man.
