The original Vulture stalks the night, deciding the time is now right to enact his plan, after having been thought dead! Nearby, Spider-Man has difficulty web-swinging in the torrential downpour. His webs are having trouble sticking to anything and he plummets out of the sky, landing hard on a rooftop. After a few moments, he groggily gets to his feet, nursing a now injured arm, and attempts to make his way home without being seen. Meanwhile, the Vulture swoops down upon a museum where his pair of wings that were confiscated from Blackie Drago are being kept. He steals the wings, sure to let the world know that the true Vulture is back! Peter finally makes his way home but finds that he can’t sleep, as his worries about his situation with Gwen weigh on his mind!

The next day, Peter arrives at school, spotting Gwen Stacy and Harry Osborn. Gwen continues to give Peter the cold shoulder, much to Harry’s confusion. Throughout class, Peter continues to agonize about Gwen’s frosty attitude, while Gwen herself secretly still pines for Peter, needing only one word of explanation to set things right! Elsewhere, at a nearby prison, Blackie Drago is given grief by his cellmates, accused of being scared that the original Vulture is back. The Vulture appears not a moment later with the wings he stole. He gives the wings to Drago, helping him to break out of prison. The confused Drago follows the Vulture for a part in his unknown plan! Back at their shared apartment, Harry reads Peter a letter they got from Flash from overseas. Peter then decides to try calling Gwen again, but the phone ends up being answered by her father, Captain Stacy. Captain Stacy asks Peter to have lunch with him the following day and Peter starts to worry if perhaps Captain Stacy has learned something about Spider-Man!

Just after, Norman Osborn knocks on the door, demanding to see Harry. Norman admits to Harry the strange memories and visions he keeps experiencing, which causes Peter to worry that Norman’s memory of being the Green Goblin could be returning! Elsewhere, the two Vultures land on a roof and the original tells Drago of how he survived. After learning of Drago’s double-cross, the Vulture found renewed will to live and snuck out of prison shortly after Drago did, disguised as a guard. Vulture admits his plan is to publicly defeat Drago, to show the world that the one, true Vulture has returned! The two begin a furious mid-air battle, which quickly draws the attention of the crowd below! Peter spots the two from the ground but feels he can’t tackle them right now with his hurt shoulder. He instead heads to the Daily Bugle, where J. Jonah Jameson quickly grabs him to head to the roof so he can photograph the two Vultures’ battle!

Peter takes pictures while the two Vultures duke it out, but notices that they’re heading awfully close to a child playing on a nearby balcony! They damage the balcony, and Peter switches to Spider-Man to assist, while Jonah just thinks Pete chickened out! Spidey grabs the kid and swings him to safety, just as the Vulture decisively beats Drago! Drago swears he’ll never wear the wings again as the police arrive, claiming that the Vulture is too much for anyone! The Vulture praises his fortune at having a chance to defeat Spider-Man as well and swoops in, while Spidey worries if he can take the Vulture, now that his arm has gone completely numb! To be continued!

Amazing Spider-Man, The (1963 series) #63 Review by (December 4, 2024)

Review: The original Vulture flies again, and he’s looking to settle the score with Blackie Drago, the second Vulture! Turns out, the Vulture survived his apparent death through sheer stubbornness, gaining a renewed will to live after learning of Drago’s betrayal. The Vulture breaks Drago out of prison, ultimately all so he can publicly defeat him to show the world that there’s only one true Vulture! The writers or fans must have agreed, as Vulture quite decisively defeats Drago, who swears to never put on the wings again! He must not have been very popular, as aside from a couple of flashback issues set around this time, he makes good on that promise and never really shows up again, especially not as the Vulture! The Vulture then decides to take the opportunity to get revenge on Spider-Man as well, who now must fight the Vulture with an injured arm! It feels like Spidey injures his arm in practically every Vulture story. You’d think, if they have to nerf the hero each time just so the villain stands a chance, at some point they’d either make said villain stronger or just stop using him.

Peter and Gwen also continue to secretly pine for each other and Peter gets two new things to worry about. First, Captain Stacy asks Peter to lunch, making Pete paranoid that he’s figured out his identity (more on that later). Secondly, Peter becomes aware of Norman Osborn’s returning memories, which causes him to stress about what he’ll do if the Green Goblin returns (also more on that later). Guess you can’t blame Peter for worrying if all of his worries end up actually happening. All in all, a solid issue featuring the return of a classic villain!

Comments: Return of the original Vulture, and Blackie Drago’s last foray as the second Vulture.
