Synopsis

America (2017 series) #10 synopsis by Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars
Exterminatrix (Oubliette Midas), CEO of Midas Corp, has taken over interdimensional Sotomayor University as new Dean Of Students Dr Billie Brightly to copy America Chavez' powers into an army of robots. But AC's allies Prodigy (David Alleyne) and X'Andria and her Leelumultipass Phi Theta Beta sorority plus the Chavez Guerillas on planet Maltixa have come to her aid. Prof Canela Douglas helped shattered America escape but is feared dead herself.

Prodigy's scan can see Prof D lying in the underground lab in the Midas base in the Cardi Birchwoods but he can't find Chavez anywhere on campus even though Zulai of the Guerillas is using her tech to help. He can see the Betas on quad bikes in Midas FIST armours about to clash with Exterminatrix on her motorbike at the Midas base. He calls on the student body to rise up with any useful inventions to rise up against Brightly's FIST troops, and he's getting lots of responses.

Chavez is lying unconscious in Classroom 32 but her spirit has gone to the Ancestral Plane which holds the history of her Fuertona people (as seen in #7). She remembers how she almost died taking the Ultimates outside of the Omniverse (in Ultimates (2015) #5). And how it felt like she died when her old love Magdalena betrayed her (in our #5), and her grandmother Madrimar left her (#7). But now she needs to wake up to get back to her friends who need her.

Exterminatrix has her army of Mindless Ones with her, also on motorbikes. As the 2 sides converge the Betas rev their quad bikes to send them flying into the air before backflipping off them. The MOs leap to intercept them and Brightly steers around them to get at the Betas. X'Andria tells the others to leave Exterminatrix to her, and go find Douglas. Brightly and the MOs surround her. But then 2 robots attack them, built and controlled by a student Yesika. However it turns out the villainess has already created some Chavez robots and they're activating now. And some of the students who don't like America and her fellow 'freaks' have 'risen up' in favour of Brightly and are now opposing the Betas.

Chavez is visited by Sanar and Berraca the creator spirits of planet Fuertona (#7 again) who tell her that she's been infected but they'll heal her. However the Fuertonas' enemies La Legion try to stop it, but Madrimar arrives to drive the monsters away. America recovers and her abuela tells her about the America robots, and she and the spirits send her back through a star portal.

Now she wakes at SU and contacts everyone to let them know she's OK. The Betas easily defeat the opposing students and continue onwards to the underground lab where they find Prof Douglas alive but in a bad way. She tells them to take the vials of America's DNA from within a globe floating above them. However the America robots are approaching.

While Yessika's robots deal with the Mindless Ones Exterminatrix' bike chases X'Andria towards an entrance to the underground base. She fires a golden bullet at her ... but America starports in to grab it, then punch the villain in the jaw and subdue her. Midas still blusters about how her Corp will conquer the Multiverse with the America robots. So AC portals them both inside the base where those robots are about to attack the Betas who are getting the DNA vials out of the floating globe. She fights them, partly by swinging her foe like a big club. Then she jams Exterminatrix' head inside the globe which causes the baddie a lot of pain. And then she finishes off the robots.

The issue finishes with her remembering some of the people who have supported her in this series (Kate Bishop (#5-6), mohawk-Storm (#3) and Madrimar (#lots)) and declaring she's now going home (Fuertona, not the Utopian Parallel, in the next 2 issues).

Review / Commentaries

America (2017 series) #10 Review by (May 24, 2025)
Sarah Brunstad and Wil Moss are joint editors again.

Jen Bartel does some of the pencils & inks in this issue, and Chris O'Halloran does some of the colouring.

Next issue will start with the aftermath of this issue, but Exterminatrix and her talking Mindless Ones will be gone. They'll all reappear in Fantastic Four (2018) #47-48 during AXE: Judgement Day. But meanwhile more conventional truly-Mindless Ones will show up in lots of places like Ben Reilly: Scarlet Spider #18-21.

These are the last apps of the Chavez Guerillas Imani & Zulai and the last mention of their planet Maltixa.
