Synopsis

America (2017 series) #9 synopsis by Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars
The mysterious Dr Billie Brightly (who we know is really Exterminatrix (Oubliette Midas)) has become Dean Of Students and seems to have taken over Sotomayor University. She and her FIST troops have taken America Chavez for breaking emergency security rules (declared after an attack by Mindless Ones) and for generally being a bad influence.

The students aren't taking this well because Chavez is popular. And America shows her unexpected strength by breaking free of the restraints they've got her in. She starts beating on the troops to the cheers of the crowd, and demanding to know what they've done with Prof Douglas. Brightly says that more FIST troops are on their way and orders the students back to their dorm rooms. And she quietly suggests that if Chavez wants to know where the Prof is she'd better come with *her*. America refuses and demands that Brightly tell her the truth now. BB mentions the serum AC was injected with in Vegas (#5-6 but it only weakened her temporarily) and says that was just the beginning as the extra troops arrive and 2 large devices suspend our heroine in a midair forcefield.

On the planet Maltixa (seen in #1-4) her fans the Chavez Guerillas are following events on Beamchat and decide to help. As do X'Andria's Sotomayor sorority the Leelumultipass Phi Theta Betas. X'Andria herself is with Prodigy (David Alleyne) (and Prof Douglas' dog Azucar) trying to see where America's been taken. Imani and Zulai of the Guerillas contact them to say they can't find any history for Brightly, and they're going to infiltrate FIST comms. Tech genius Zu has also shielded them from surveillance. For some reason X and P check surveillance footage of when Prof Douglas was last seen. They see Chavez with her and then leaving, and then the Prof being abducted by someone David recognises as Exterminatrix, CEO of Midas Corp. Suddenly what seems like a FIST troop burst in on the pair. But it's the Betas who had attacked the troop and stolen their armour.

A Mindless One who can speak tells Brightly that their investors aren't happy with how the Las Vegas event panned out (#5-6). But she transforms into Exterminatrix and the MO gives her her 2 golden guns, and she says that the investors will be back onside when the current plan comes to fruition.

A drone guided by Alleyne discovers the Midas base camp in the Cardi Birchwoods. Inside the villain gloats to Canela Douglas trapped in a containment tube. She tells how her investors helped create the Entity war machine (#1-4) and she wants it back. But she intends to create a robot army with America's powers, including creating portals to other timelines/dimensions, to conquer the multiverse. And she wants Douglas to give her the code to the multiversal ancestral database she's compiled. But Canela manages to break out of her tube and attacks her, saying she's a bruja (a Latin American 'witch'). She tries to shut off E's control panel but the baddie nicks her with 2 gunshots. However CD creates an electrical storm which achieves her aim and frees Chavez from the forcefield. America chooses discretion over valour and escapes via a star portal.

The armoured Betas, including X'Andria who had got her armour by pretending to join the FIST last issue, head towards the Cardi woods on quad bikes. Prodigy and the Maltixans think Prof Douglas is dead. But Ext tells the MO to put her in a stronger tube as she goes out to face the 'rebels' on her motorbike. And America has ported to Classroom #32 where she's collapsed and dreams of flying with her abuela Madrimar.
