Story Name:

An army of me

Synopsis

America (2017 series) #4 synopsis by Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars
In #1 America Chavez saved the people of Maltixa in the Utopian Parallel outside the multiverse from a large 'female' Entity. But last issue it returned as lots of little Entities, and America came back to save them again. But then the giant version appeared too.

But this issue starts over 10 years ago in the UP. We are reminded that the UP was created by the Demiurge but at that time it was beginning to be pulled into the multiverse where the Demiurge was currently a child called Billy Kaplan. America's mothers Amelia and Elena sacrificed themselves to keep the UP safe. (See Young Avengers vol 2 for more details.) America woke up to find them gone and decoded to enter the multiverse to find them. (We saw her arrive on Earth last issue.)

She's now fighting the Entities with the help of  X'Andria and her Leelumultipass Phi Theta Beta sorority who followed her to Maltixa in a spaceship piloted by Prodigy. Also helping are the teen Maltixan Chavez Guerillas, her fans who called her here. In particular their tech-whiz Zulai starts cobbling together a device. Chavez fights the big Entity who keeps getting bigger while repeating that she must be annihilated because of a 'mark'.

America realises that her fists won't solve this because the Entity obviously recovered from her punch in #1 which shattered it into little (star-shaped) bits. At this point Zu activates gobbledy-gook special sounds from her sound system powered by the spaceship and the energy of the fighters. And it gives Chavez time to formulate a plan. She says she's going to end the situation where it began, and generates a star-portal to leave. But the Guerillas' leader Imani complains that that's what she did last time, and left them to fend for themselves. As a hero she's a fake, and therefore so are the Chavez Guerillas.

America leaves anyway. En route she remembers that Peggy Carter told her to plan (#2) and Storm told her to centre herself in the chaos (#3) to listen for the place she needs to be. She does so and successfully portals back a few weeks in time to the original fight with the Entity. Past Chavez is suspicious until future Chavez proves who she is by naming their parents. F-C persuades P-C that super-punching the Entity won't work, but she has a plan. They attack together and grab the foe. F-C kicks open a portal and they push the Entity through it, and F-C follows her ...

... to the present in the spaceship where the Entity winds up in a containment cell. Pilot Prodigy excitedly comments that the big Entity outside and all the little Entities have gone. America tries to get the E to tell her why she's been attacking Maltixa, but gets no reply. Prodigy says his sensors say it's a created being. They're interrupted by Blue marvel on vidcom asking David Alleyne to return the Ultimates spaceship that he 'borrowed'. America asks Dr Brashear to keep the Entity under observation, and in return he asks her to find out where it came from.

America then goes out to meet Imani who's forgiven her and they hug. X'Andria and the Leelumultipass Phi Theta Betas get in the spaceship and Prodigy flies it away. Zulai admits that some of her tech was actually magic. America is reunited with her ex-girlfriend Lisa Halloran who admits that she only pretended that the Guerillas had kidnapped her. They needed America and she wanted to get her attention because she'd been ignoring all her calls and texts. A says she was ignoring them because they hurt. But they now agree that they were right to break up (#1). But they can still share a moment now ...

... but not for long because a cloaked female appears floating before them, claiming to know Chavez and her mothers. She also creates start portals like America's to transport Lisa back to New York and the Guerillas to the beaches of Uzam for R&R. Imani vouches for her because she it was who linked them up with Lisa, and she names her Madrimar (who we've seen the past 2 issues) and then she and the CGs take the portal. Lisa offers to stay but America sends her to NY, but through her *own* portal just for safety.

AC is left with Madrimar. She guesses that it was M who told Peggy Carter and Storm to expect her. M confirms it (and we know she's also working with A's University teacher Prof Douglas (#2)). She also admits that she made A's portals take her to meet them. America's angry about it. And when Madrimar pulls back her hood and asks if A sees her moms in her face, Chavez hotly denies it (unless she's her older self) and portals away. Madrimar says they are 'one' and remembers AC as a young girl in the Utopian Parallel.

Review / Commentaries

America (2017 series) #4 Review by (February 22, 2025)
The credits are complex. Ming Doyle returns from #2 to do some of the pencilling and inking. Jordan continues from last issue (and the last 2 covers) helping with the colouring. But penciller Joe Quinones also does some of the inking and colouring (possibly om the Utopian Parallel flashbacks).

I don't think we ever see the Entity again. But we will find out who created it (and it wasn't Madrimar).

Lisa Halloran also exits the series and America's life here. The next time we see her in War Of The Reams: Omega she'll meet up with Jane Foster who's replacing her Thor super-id with that of (a) Valkyrie, and follow her into the Jane Foster: Valkyrie series.

Blue Marvel will next appear in Captain America: Steve Rogers in CA:SR#14, a lead-in to the Secret Empire event.

America Chavez herself will continue (away from Sotomayor University on Spring Break) into #5-6 guest-starring her Young Avengers pal Kate Bishop/Hawkeye. Madrimar will be in #6.

Sotomayor chars X'Andria and Prodigy won't be seen until #7, and the Maltixans Imani and Zulai will have to wait until #9.
