Your heart is true

Synopsis

America (2017 series) #6 synopsis by Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars
Last issue America Chavez met up with an old friend/love Magdalena who drugged her. Now she's woken up in a boxing ring surrounded by rocky Mindless Ones. They shove her to her feet and we see that the front rows of the audience are supervillains. The announcer Arcade lets us know that this is Midas Fight Night in Las Vegas, and the bout tonight will be between America and Magdalena 'La Sirena' Velez - and it will be to the death. Ame still doesn't know what's going on until Mags punches her in the jaw.

We now get a flashback to where the abduction took place at the Jenny Rose cafe in the desert. Kate Bishop (superheroine Hawkeye and Los Angeles PI) had accompanied Chavez to the meeting and had just worked out that Magdalena was working for the bad guys when she saw America fall and get scooped up by a grabber from a helicopter. She started following the chopper in her Firebird when a star-shaped portal (like those employed by AC) deposited a woman into the passenger seat who she correctly deduced was Madrimar who America had told her about. On the way to Vegas Madrimar claims that Magdalena isn't the villain she seems to be.

Now America suggests she just portals herself and Mags away, but a big screen suddenly shows why this isn't an option. It shows 2 Mindless Ones holding Mags' father prisoner, and Arcade explains that if La Sirena wins she and her dad go free but if she loses he dies. Mags apologises to Ame as she continues hitting her. Ame just blocks blows without fighting back. Mags says she doesn't expect to beat her superpowered friend but she asks Ame to save her dad when she wins. She says that if Ame leaves they'll kill her and Papi and then come after Chavez anyway. Ame tells her not to worry about *her*. Arcade chats with 1 Mindless One in a suit who seems far from mindless. Arcade is tired of the talking and not enough fighting. This MO orders his mates into the ring, but reminds Arcade that a mysterious 'Her' has plans for Chavez.

Meanwhile Hawkeye and Madrimar have arrived in the building and are taking down Mindless Ones with arrows and fists. They rescue Magdalena's father.

Back in the ring America won't accept Mags' plan to sacrifice herself for her papi. Then the MO's attack and AC has to fight them off. When she's worn down (partly because she's still groggy from the drug) Mags is in a position to deliver a killing blow ...

... but a star portal over the ring drops Madrimar, Hawkeye and Papi into the fray. Madrimar seems to dispense of the rocky foes, Mags and Papi are reunited and Kate explains to America that Midas is behind everything. America tells Kate to get the 2 civilians to safety. Arcade tells the assembled villains to attack Chavez but the talkative MO reminds them via the screen that the Midas Corporation needs her (only just) alive. Madrimar has stayed to help but America repeats her claims in earlier issues not to want or need her help.

However 1st they have to fight off the Wrecking Crew (Bulldozer, Piledriver, Thunderball and Wrecker). While doing so M repeats that she has a connection to AC, but AC was never taught how to find 'us'. Arcade attacks them in a (remote-controlled?) craft with a grabber, but the duo wreck it with mighty punches. M offers to reach AC the Power Stomp, and at last states clearly that she is her grandmother. The MO's start fighting each other and Arcade's controls go on the fritz.  Our duo rise into the air on a tower of power. M tells AC to remember all she's learned in the past issues and feel the energy they share. Then they plunge down to the ground, scattering villains and Mindless Ones.

The fighting's now over. Madrimar tells America that she is the mother of her mother Amalia. AC still can't take it in but M invites her to the Ancestral Plane. Outside the other 3 are waiting at Kate's car. She and Magdalena agree that they each love America in their own ways. M tells K that Midas used the threat to her father to make her bring America to them. It was only afterwards that she learned about the death natch. The duo affirm a strong friendship between themselves. Madrimar and AC arrive. Mags and Ame make up, and Madrimar creates a portal to take Mags and her dad home. Kate says she's going back to LA to investigate Misa, and she'll also check Madrimar out. When she's gone America and her abuela take a portal to their 'home'.

In an epilogue the boss MO reports to his boss, who turns to be Oubliette Midas/Exterminatrix. She's at Sotomayor University. She tells him to return to Villa Xirta and wait for further instructions.

Review / Commentaries

America (2017 series) #6 Review by (March 1, 2025)
Kelly Thompson helps with the scripting again, and Walden Wong helps with the inking.

The Mindless Ones were 1st seen in Dr Strange's tale in Strange Tales #127 where they lived in part of Dormammu's Dark Dimension. They have mainly remained there and been involved in stories that featured Dormammu and/or his Dimension. However as time passed they have more and more often been seen outside these restrictions.
They have also usually been truly mindless, but in the Original Sin series some of them evolved into thinking beings. Oubliette Midas was also involved there so probably that's who the ones who work for her here are.

Oubliette is the adopted daughter of Dr Midas. We 1st met them and the Midas Foundation in the 2000 mini-series which introduced Marvel Boy (Noh-Varr), a Kree from an alternate timeline. Since Original Sin she showed up (along with some Mindless Ones) in #8-11 of the 2015 Mighty Thor (Jane Foster) series.

Arcade seems to have lost some status here, being employed to run Midas Fight Nights rather than his own Murderworld. He's had his ups and downs before but had a new Murderworld in Antarctica in the Avengers Arena series. But then in Avengers Undercover he was a prisoner of the Masters Of Evil. But he then had other Murderworlds in Las Vegas for the 2017 Elektra mini-series and in Staten Island in his latest app Unbelievable Gwenpool #12-13.
After this app he'll have a Murderworld in Madripoor with 1 of his old associates Miss Locke (last seen in 2010's Deadpool Team-Up #899) in Spider-Man/Deadpool #21-22.

The Wrecking Crew were last all together in Star-Lord (2017) #5 (alongside many other villains), and without Bulldozer in Jean Grey #1 and Infamous Iron Man #7 (in another crowd as Hood tried reorganise his old gang against the 'now-heroic' Dr Doom). Wrecker also appeared with Thunderball and Thunderball and many others (possibly including Bulldozer and Piledriver) in prison in InfIM#12.
After this app they'll stick together for a couple of flashbacks followed by Thunderbolts (2016) #10&12 (as part of the Masters Of Evil) where #12 is part of the Secret Empire event.

Other villains seen in the background are Asp, Beetle, Black Cat, Hobgoblin, Owl and Tombstone.

Kate Bishop leaves the series at this point and heads directly to the end of the Secret Empire event in SE#10. She and Chavez will meet up again as co-stars in the 2018 West Coast Avengers series.

#7 is written as if it follows directly from here.
But the Marvel Chronology Project finds it necessary to put lots of stuff including the Secret Empire event and the end of the Ultimates series before #7.
America Chavez will enter Secret Empire via Mighty Captain Marvel #5/SE#0. Ultimates² #7-9&100 are entangled within SE, and for AC the event ends with MCM#8/SE#8. For her our #7-12 follows straight after that.
Exterminatrix also shows up between here and #7 in a villain crowd in Generation X (2017) #6-7 (before SE begins).
