Synopsis

America (2017 series) #11 synopsis by Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars
Last issue America Chavez and a load of allies defeated Exterminatrix and her Mindless Ones and Midas Corps troops, and now the interdimensional Sotomayor University is safe.

Now she's quietly celebrating with Prodigy (David Alleyne) and X'Andria. A student meeting is held in the Majestic Gardens where P & X give speeches of solidarity and freedom. AC sits with Professor Canela Douglas to talk about her future at the U. She asks her to be her advisor on a study of the revolutionary history of her mother Amalia's homeworld Fuertona. And she leaves to go there to return next semester.

1st she navigates an array of star portals to get to the Ancestral Plane where she's greeted by her grandmother Madrimar. After a home-cooked meal her abuela leads her to the Starling Highway, a 'tube' of portals that takes them directly to Fuertona. (Fuertonas who like AC can create star portals are called Starlings.) They land and head for the Cove Of Uzam. On the way M explains that the ice age created by the creator-spirits Sanar and Berraca didn't destroy the invading 'monsters' called La Legion and now they're back.

In the Cove lies the Crystal Of Uzam. Uzam was the 1st Starling and was birthed in the waterfall here. Now she *is* the Crystal which is the source of all Starling power. America prepares to enter the Crystal as star-marks (which we've never noticed before) on her wrist begin to glow. The Crystal opens for her and her star-marks shatter. She is energised and exits flying. Suddenly she sees another Fuertona female flying past and falls out of the sky in surprise. Madrimar tells her that is Salgado, 1 of many Fuertonas here to defend the planet against La Legion.

Then a red cloud appears and many of the monsters fly out of it. M advises her that La Legion fight best in teams so they should pick them off 1 by 1. They try that but get mobbed. Then Salgado returns to help. But M gets bitten and carried off into the cloud. S advises her to trust M who's been in red clouds before and survived. They should just keep fighting the monsters outside. A attacks 1 but suddenly feels dizzy, but then the fighting is over.

S explains that La Legion can absorb their energy, but not use it. However it makes Fuertonas weaker. A finds she can't even create a portal. S advises that they need to rest on the ground for 2 sun waves to get their full strength back. A wants to go back in the crystal to power up again but S tells her that Uzam power is a finite resource, and also overuse is dangerous to the body. But America says she'll do anything to save her grandma.

Review / Commentaries

America (2017 series) #11 Review by (May 31, 2025)
Flaviano Armentaro is the artist for the Sotomayor University part of this issue, with Jordan Gibson on colours.
Sarah Brunstad and Wil Moss continue as joint Editors.

This is the last we'll see of Sotomayor U and Prof Douglas and X'Andria. Who knows whether America Chavez returned for another semester?

Prodigy also exits the series to return to his X-Men roots in the New Mutants: Dead Souls mini-series.

The solicitation for this issue suggested that La Legion were connected to the Midas Corporation, and this was part 1 of The Midas War. But this idea seems to be dropped.
