Synopsis

America (2017 series) #12 synopsis by Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars
Last issue America Chavez came to planet Fuertona for the 1st time, the homeworld of her mother Amalia and grandmother Madrimar. She got extra power from the Crystal Of Uzam but found that the Fuertonas' ancient enemy the monsters called La Legion had returned. She, Madrimar and a Fuertona called Salgado fought them but they captured Madrimar and took her into their red cloud. Fighting La Legion drained her powers so desperate America planned to re-enter the Crystal even though S warned her of dire consequences.

She flies to the Crystal followed by the slower Salgado. She asks it to open up again for her but Legion monsters attack her. She fights back and they drain more of her energy, and then they scrabble at the Crystal. It blasts them away and sends power to AC which lifts her into the air so she can drop with a power stomp (finishing knocking the Legion out?). S has arrived to see the Crystal talking to America, which has never happened before. Uzam tells her that she has now made Chavez immune to La Legion's power drain. But she doesn't need more power, rather she needs to seek the truth about the monsters.

A & S head towards the nearest red cloud. A tells S that Uzam has revealed to her that the clouds are all linked, and the Legion use them to travel via. As they reach the cloud Madrimar falls out of it and A catches her. S leads A to M's home where they can let her rest. They are greeted by M's 2 dragon-wolf puppies. M asks S to fetch the Uzam Scrolls from a bookshelf and make some tea. While she's gone M tells A about the final days of the earlier Legion invasion. (On the advice of founding spirits Sana & Berraca) the Fuertonas were evacuating their planet. The Starlings (Fuertonas with powers like America's) fought a rearguard action to protect the others. Then Madrimar told the rest to leave too until she was the last. She tried not fighting the Legion and they seemed to ignore her and instead combined into a mass which she realised was draining energy from the planet itself. Sana & Berraca appeared to her and told her to take her child (Amalia) and flee. They would deal with the Legion (by causing an Ice Age). M says the Fuertonas knew that La Legion wanted the Uzam Crystal but they didn't know why.

Salgado arrives with scroll and tea as America asks Madrimar why the Legion came back after the Ice Age? But M turns strange and says that some of 'us' never died. The dragon-wolves snarl as everyone realises that M is possessed. A doesn't want to hurt her abuela so she and S put her into a cage (designed for transporting the dragon-wolves?).

S recruits 4 or 5 more powerful female Fuertonas. They all fight off La Legion while Chavez, against their advice, dives into a red cloud. She emerges on the planet of La Legion, but many of them are dead. And she finds that she and the Legion can now talk to each other. A representative tells their history. During Sanar & Berraca's great sleep(?) Uzam the 1st Starling came to their world, which was dying, but had no way of getting home. They provided the way (via the red clouds?) and in return they were offered endless healing energy. But Uzam crystallised on return and was unable to communicate with anyone, until today. They came to Uzam's world Fuertona for what they were owed and needed, but no-one could understand them - until today. America promises to put things right ...

... and a few hours later we see Fuertonas and La Legion getting together and Madrimar back to normal. Chavez hands over a piece of the Crystal Of Uzam to La Legion who take it back to their planet through the red cloud system. America tells her grandmother that she sense a power bigger than that of Uzam, the world-creating power of Sanar & Berraca. So she flies out into the universe with the power to create worlds.

Review / Commentaries

America (2017 series) #12 Review by (June 7, 2025)
Stacey Lee is the artist for most of this issue. Annie Wu and Flaviano Armentaro pitch in, probably Armentaro for the last page with America flying off into the universe and Wu for the preceding 2 pages where everything turns out OK.
Chris O'Halloran probably colours Lee as last issue and Jordan Gibson probably does Armentaro and Wu.
Editing is by Sarah Brunstad and Wil Moss again.

The solicit for this issue still says this is part of the Midas War. And the end of #7 said that someone created La Legion and was still a danger. It sounds to me as though it was intended that Midas were behind the Legion, but something made the plan change. Maybe this series was cut short and needed a quicker ending to tie up loose ends?

The dragon-wolf puppies are named Almodovar and Del Toro after the film directors Pedro and Guillermo.

That's really the end for Madrimar, the Fuertonas and La Legion because the next mini-series America Chavez: Made In The USA will say that they (and the extradimensional Utopian Parallel) were imaginary.
And if she had the power to create worlds that was imaginary too.

America Chavez will appear next in a mass gathering in Avengers #689, the penultimate part of the No Surrender story.
Then she'll be in some issues of the Marvel Rising 'event', before joining her friend Kate Bishop for the 2018 West Coast Avengers series.
