Story Name:

I Am the Black Widow Part 4 of 4

Synopsis

Black Widow #10 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Craig has completed the antidote for Apogee’s serum, in both gas and injectable form. Lucy has improvised a hero costume and is planning to deliver the antidote to Black Widow, knowing the dangers of using her electrical powers but wanting to help the team….

At Apogee’s HQ, Black Widow, White Widow, and Spider-Girl are confronting the villain and his followers, the Olio, and Apogee has just imbibed his serum and turned into a giant with flaming hands. In the melee, one of the Olio bursts into flame and Apogee accuses Natasha of doing that. She tries to explain that it is the effect of the bad guy’s drug but he doesn’t believe her. Apogee flees and Nat’s back-up arrives: Hawkeye (Kate Bishop) so Nat goes after him. Craig and Lucy arrive and White Widow and Spider-Girl seal the doors and Craig releases the gas while Lucy pursues Nat….

Apogee turns to confront Natasha on a catwalk in a chemical plant. After fighting, he takes more of his serum and grows even larger. He sizes Nat but Lucy arrives and shocks him, followed by an injection of the antidote. Nat kicks him off the catwalk and into a vat of chemicals. But Lucy can’t turn off her powers, her arms possibly permanently electrified. Nat tries to comfort her and they return to the main room where the Widows try to explain to the now-depowered Olio that the serum was toxic and would have killed them eventually. Many don’t believe her. Lucy makes an impassioned speech that quiets them down and the heroes leave….

Epilogue: Apogee rises from the vat….

Review / Commentaries

Black Widow #10 Review by (November 30, 2021)

Review: Nice wrap-up to the story arc, with a promise of big changes ahead for Lucy and the likely return of Apogee somewhere down the road. That latter depends on whether he can be fleshed out into a more interesting figure. As it was, he was poorly defined, just a generic gang boss who turned into a monster. Perhaps with his new power on a non-action story level. Which reminds me that the action scenes were well done with a two-page spread divided among three heroines. And the battle between Nat and Apogee was in a huge grid of multiple tiny panels, for a flashy effect. Series is running along nicely now.

Comments: Rafael de Latorre contributed to the penciling and inking.
