Black Widow #6 cover

Story Name:

Widows Part 1 of 1

Synopsis

Black Widow #6 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Black Widow stands in a courtyard enclosed by the inner walls of a skyscraper, seeking the crime boss called Apogee. She battles a big dumb giant, breaking his arms then then stinging him in the back of the neck. Apogee’s voice promises even better. She sews up her wounds and thinks of her baby Stevie….

Six days earlier in a San Francisco flower market, Natasha caught a teenage girl swiping her wallet and chased her through the streets and corners her. Nat offers to swap her own wallet for all that the girl, who falsely says her name is “Marigold,” is already carrying. When Yelena Belova shows up, Nat hands the girl her wallet and she tosses several others back. Nat, who has a tracker in her wallet, wants to help the girl, while Yelena, calling herself the White Widow, suggests they could train her for a team she is dreaming of….

Back to Nat at the skyscraper: confronted by another hulking tough guy, she whips out her grappling hook and easily ascends nearly to the penthouse. She blows up a door to prevent anyone from the lower levels from coming up and ties another big bruiser to a guy with wings, making them both plummet to the ground. She climbs to the top level, blows open a window, fires off a smoke bomb and beats up the four henchmen. She grabs the last guy and discovers he is not Apogee. She gives this guy a warning for Apogee and tosses him off the balcony (he has a parachute, presumably for just such an emergency). Nat calls Belova to tell her Apogee was never there and to prepare the guest room, she’s bringing home the unconscious “Marigold” ….

Review / Commentaries

Black Widow #6 Review by (August 3, 2021)

Review: First impression: didn’t we see this in DREDD, only a lot nastier and more dangerous? Here BW is stuck in a video game (her words) yet she finds a way to bypass nearly all the levels to limit the action scenes. Stepping back, this is the first issue of a new arc and one that had promised to take our heroine in a bold new direction. So it looks like she’s taking on a new gangster boss in town and she’s working with Yelena Belova, who now calls herself the White Widow. And there’s a hint of Nat building a team, which she doesn’t like but is probably going to happen, as Natasha as leader of her own version of SHIELD is a totally new direction for the character. So, things look promising for this arc in Nat’s first ongoing in years.

Comments: Yelena Belova is called the White Widow starting with this issue, despite there being a new comic from Absolute titled WHITE WIDOW. And Marigold’s real name is revealed to be Lucy next issue.
