Captain America: Sam Wilson #3 Review by (November 22, 2015)
CComments: Dr Karl Malus was introduced in SPIDER-WOMAN #30 and appeared from time-to-time in CAPTAIN AMERICA in the 1980s usually associated with the Power Broker; he was largely ignored for several years until his most recent appearance in SUPERIOR CARNAGE in 2013 which serves the slimy creep right. First appearance of Joaquin Torres likely to be the new Falcon. The original Capwolf saga was in CAPTAIN AMERICA #402-408 and featured Steve Cap. Oh and Mike Choi gave Daniel Acuna an assist with the art this issue.

Review: Well I needn’t have worried: I was thinking that with all the ballyhoo over New Sam Cap’s political stands, the comics would take on a solemn, self-righteous tone familiar to all those who read political cartoons. Needn’t have worried: by invoking what is likely the silliest Cap story arc ever and treating it like the joke it was, the comic disarms the skeptical reader and proves that this “new Cap” title will be a lot of fun. And is it ever fun, also wrapping up the last details from issue #1 and leading into the next arc. And kudos to them for finding something interesting to do with two 1980s-era Cap baddies that were among the few not revived by Ed Brubaker: Karl Malus and the Serpent Society (the previous volume gave us Armadillo; who’s next, Flag-Smasher?). And the icing on the cake is that terrific cover, a homage to Richard Corben by Daniel Acuna. I’m actually looking forward to the next issue.

Captain America: Sam Wilson #3 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

On a late-night mission, Misty Knight enters the laboratory of Dr Karl Malus to find it mostly empty…she is attacked by a huge boar-man which then flees the building. She turns on the light to find Captain America, Sam Wilson—and he is a werewolf….which she finds very funny….

Earlier, Cap was pursuing the lead that the Sons of the Serpent hate group were procuring healthy males for illegal genetic experiments by Dr Karl Malus to create animal-people. Cap confronted him in his lab and discovered that after his recent encounter with Carnage, he now has symbiote powers. With his invulnerability and tentacles, Malus easily defeats Cap while seizing Redwing as a prize….

And now Cap is a werewolf. He and Misty head out in search of Malus and Redwing; they locate the new lab and crash in, facing a gang of animal men. Redwing unleashes his sonic cannon and disables all the baddies. Sam finds his avian partner—and the missing Joaquin Torres, now transformed into a bird-man….

Cap reports back to Joaquin’s grandmother (see issue #1) that her grandson is safe. Taken aback by Cap’s new appearance, she is nevertheless grateful for his actions. Meanwhile, Sam’s wolfish appearance is said to be temporary—which means Misty and D-Man must get all their jokes in quickly. Cap is contacted by his mysterious informant the Whisperer who tells him who was behind Malus….

The board of a cosmetics firm is delighted hearing a report of the plans of their new publicity team to give them global dominance—in more than cosmetics. And the new PR people are Serpent Solutions, formerly the Serpent Society, led by Viper….
