Captain America #6: Review

Dec 2018
Ta-Nehisi Coates, Leinil Francis Yu

Story Name:

Winter in America: Part VI

Synopsis

Captain America #6 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Alexa Lukin brings her newly resurrected husband Aleksander Lukin up to speed on the Power Elite and their plans to take over the USA and to kill Captain America. They go for a romantic walk in the woods and she deflects the question of how he died (shot by Sharon Carter) to rekindle their love....

Her mind flashes back to when she used a magic spell to summon her former teacher Grigori Rasputin (yes, THE Rasputin) whom she met while trying to separate the Red Skull from her husband's mind; she explains the emptiness of her life since Aleksander died and how her world has fallen and she wants to restore it to its former greatness with Aleksander at the helm. Rasputin declines an offer to join her but steers her to Selene who has ambition to match hers. It was Selene who was able to raise Aleksander from the dead using the blood of his killer Sharon Carter (last issue). And now that America is troubled by uncertainty and fear, this is the time to strike. And to kill Captain America, one must first kill the dream....

Nick Fury Jr. gets in touch with Steve Rogers, Sharon Carter, and Winter Soldier with the news that General Thunderbolt Ross has been murdered—and Cap is the chief suspect....

Captain America #6 Review by (December 19, 2018)

Review: So what's this? The final issue of the story arc is all about the Lukins' romance and setting up Cap for the next arc, with a surprise guest appearance by Rasputin (he needs the work since HELLBOY doesn't use him any more). So the baddies are plotting Cap's death and the last time Cap died Aleksander Lukin and Red Skull were there too. Should we be looking for Crossbones and Sin to show up again? This first arc seems to be rehashing various Ed Brubaker tropes only without the controversy over Winter Soldier's identity to get everyone talking. And the political undertones are a watered down version of what Nick Spencer was adding during his run (I appreciate the watering down part as I got tired of feeling that Spencer was yelling in my face). So Cap is accused of murder again and he'll be going on the run again. And more familiar stuff set up by a rather talky issue. That cover is rather fearsome though.

Comments: Steve Rogers does not appear in his Captain America outfit in this issue. Aleksander Lukin was gunned down by Sharon Carter in CAPTAIN AMERICA Vol. 5 #42 and restored to life last issue. Lukin quotes the song “Feeling Good” by Nina Simone. In place of the cover logo, there is a black banner that reads “Stan Lee, 1922-2018.” Issue includes a brief tribute to Stan.
