Champions #19 Review by (April 15, 2018)
As I surmised last issue the other potential recruits Falcon, Patriot and Red Locust have quit leaving only Ironheart. But this issue doesn't even mention them. And Wasp wasn't supposedly a potential member, she was here helping Vision with Viv 2.0.

Human Fly and Scorpia are both mainly Spider-Man villains. HF dates back to Amazing SM Annual #10 in the 1970's, and Scorpia (female replacement for Scorpion who had become the latest Venom) SM: Power of Terror #2 in the 90's. I don't think they've ever worked together before.

In post-Secret Wars universe Fly has only been seen in the Pleasant Hill prison during Avengers Standoff in All-New All-Different Avengers #8. But Scorpia was in various issues of Deadpool & the Mercs For Money as 1 of Caroline LeFay's Doom Maidens, and during Secret Empire allied with the heroes in Uncanny Avengers v3 #24-25.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Champions #19 Synopsis by Rob Johnson
On Baffin Island in  Nunavut, Northern Canada 2 Inuit investigate a building complex that has somehow been erected on a glacier within the last week. Pilip helps Amka over a barbed wire fence She sneaks into the main building avoiding round flying security drones. In the middle she finds a naked woman with extremely long hair floating in a transparent globe who asks for help in Inuktitut, 1 of the Inuit languages.

Next morning in New York City Human Fly and Scorpia have carried out an unspecified heist. Now as Fly flies off carrying his partner and the stolen case they are pursued by Nova (Sam Alexander). But Fly dodges out of the way and Nova the Human Rocket has to brake hard to (unsuccessfully) avoid slamming into a skyscraper window. The villains' glee is short-lived however as Spider-Man (Miles Morales) wraps them up in webbing. Then he drops to them to answer a call from Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan), presumably knowing that Nova will catch them. Kamala wants them for a Champions meeting. Nova will bring snacks.

48 minutes later (in Central Park?) the pair are blindfolded for a surprise. Kamala and Viv Vision take the blindfolds off to reveal their new base the Champions Mobile Bunker. Viv says it was designed by Amadeus Cho (Hulk), Nadia Pym (Wasp) and Riri Williams (Ironheart) with help from herself. It's taken 3 weeks to build.

Riri is the only 1 of them not out here admiring the result. She's inside still tinkering. Kamala goes to get her but Riri ignores the invitation to join the others in favour of finishing fixing the heat sink. Kamala leaves her to it.

Nadia shows the 2 boys around the inside, especially the individual quarters. Miles and Sam have to share a room because the last bedroom had to be converted to a restroom (or the equivalent British euphemism bathroom). Nova grabs the top bunk. The team (including Riri still tinkering with 1 of her armour gauntlets) convene in the command centre where a hologram globe will highlight situations anywhere in the world to potentially be dealt with.

Wasp reports that her G(enius) I(n action) R(esearch) L(abs) Gang (from the Unstoppable Wasp series) have been monitoring ice levels in the Arctic and 1 of the recording beacons has gone dead. She suggests they give the CMB a test-drive and go investigate. (No points for guessing exactly where the beacon was.)

6 hours later Riri is in her quarters tinkering (again) with her armour. Viv ghosts in for a chat (after waving her arm through the floor to ask permission). She says that the others are concerned about her. But not Viv because she's turned off her emotions to avoid dwelling on the events with her 'sister' Viv 2.0 in the last 2 issues. When Riri asks her what that's like she responds that she can't have feelings about not having feelings.

Viv offers to listen to her concerns. Riri says she's never been on a team before and she feels weird like she doesn't belong. But they reach a conclusion that they're all weirdos on this bus and they can help each other to benefit from the experience.

The bus in question has reached its destination where the occupants of the base are constructing something even bigger next to them out of ice. The drones spot them and start scanning them. They ignore Amadeus' message of peace. Riri armours up and she and Viv go out to meet the drones. The drones react to them all as a threat and laser sights target Ironheart and through the CMB's windscreen.

Miles' spider-sense warns the occupants to duck to avoid the lasers and Amadeus Hulks out. Wasp's sting has no effect on the armoured drones, but Ironheart's armour repels the lasers as well. And they just pass through Viv Vision. Nova extends his forcefield to cover the broken windscreen and then blasts out to destroy many of the drones. But he's now exhausted and his shield fails. And a laser beam punches through his chest.
