Synopsis

Daredevil (1964 series) #165 synopsis by Anthony Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

After receiving a tip from an informant, Daredevil heads to Josie’s Bar to interrogate a lowlife named Pike. He grills Pike about any information he may have about a shipment of adamantium that was recently stolen and is set to be smuggled into New York. While Daredevil deals with the rest of the bar, he lets Pike go, who unwittingly leads Daredevil back to his accomplices. When Pike warns them that Daredevil is on to them, Daredevil also overhears that the stolen adamantium is set to be delivered to Glenn Industries, much to his shock! Over at said company, the board of directors discuss a mystery client who wishes to purchase their New Jersey electronics plant, for some not-so-legal purposes.

Heather Glenn discovers the meeting and they feign innocence until Daredevil arrives, revealing they’re dealing in stolen goods. Heather remembers how Daredevil was the reason her father was arrested for a crime he didn’t commit, before he took his own life, causing her to throw Daredevil out. The next day, Matt is still sore about the whole ordeal and snaps at Foggy when he returns to their law office with his truly garish wedding tuxedo. Meanwhile, Heather, having cooled off, decides to investigate her company’s records and is grabbed by some very recognizable tentacles! At his apartment, Matt is alerted that something may be wrong with Heather after she stood up her current boyfriend, Rico. Black Widow offers to help Matt, but he says he has to do this alone, making Natasha realize that Matt truly loves Heather and not her.

Daredevil heads to the wharf where the stolen shipment of adamantium is being delivered and finds Pike and his accomplices attempting to rip it off. Daredevil deals with them until all present are surprised by the sudden arrival of Doctor Octopus, there to acquire the shipment for himself! Doc Ock easily overpowers Daredevil and holds him underwater, just waiting for him to drown. Daredevil realizes his only chance is to play dead and goes limp to make Ock think he’s drowned as he drifts off after eventually being released. Some time later, the police drag Daredevil out of the water and he suddenly sputters to life and takes off after Ock once more!

At the New Jersey Glenn Industries plant, Doctor Octopus reveals to Heather that he is the mystery client, there to use the plant to construct new adamantium arms for himself! The lights suddenly go out and Daredevil arrives, just as Doc Ock turns on the emergency generators. Daredevil does his best to avoid Ock’s tentacles and gets a few hits in but quickly finds himself overwhelmed. Doc Ock has Daredevil pinned, toying with him until Heather cuts herself free from her bonds and slashes at Doc Ock’s face with a shard of broken glass! This causes him to release Daredevil, who then goads Doc Ock into recklessly attacking him, causing Ock to hit the high voltage line Daredevil felt behind him, electrocuting him. Daredevil turns off the power before Doc Ock is killed and his sentient tentacles carry the unconscious Ock off. Matt tends to Heather and the two reignite their love for each other. This is also seen by the secret arrival of Black Widow which prompts her to leave New York, feeling there’s nothing left to keep her there anymore.

Review / Commentaries

Daredevil (1964 series) #165 Review by (January 1, 2025)

Review: Daredevil takes on Doctor Octopus for a unique hero/villain pairing! It’s a rather simple issue, where Doc Ock partners with Glenn Industries to acquire some stolen adamantium and Daredevil gets in his way to protect Heather. It’s the first time they meet and square off and it’s rather interesting seeing Doc Ock fight someone who isn’t Spider-Man, which doesn’t happen very often. It’s also possibly the only time they encounter each other that I can think of, at least off the top of my head. This makes sense, as it goes just as a meeting with these two characters should, with Daredevil primarily losing and only able to overcome Doc Ock by goading him into being reckless, which is probably the only way you could realistically have Daredevil beat him. The art and choreography showcasing this are excellent as always. Matt and Heather also reunite which causes Black Widow to leave New York, which primarily serves as a way to write her out of the series.

Comments: First meeting and battle between Daredevil and Doctor Octopus. Doc Ock details how he escaped his last battle with Spider-Man, which took place in Spectacular Spider-Man Annual #1. First issue with Frank Miller as co-plotter.
