In the Hands of Bullseye

Synopsis

Daredevil #160 synopsis by Anthony Silvestro
Rating: 4.5 stars

The Black Widow returns to her penthouse apartment, via her window, where she finds Bullseye waiting for her. The two engage in a brutal fight, with Bullseye using such items as a hairbrush, a picture frame, and a vase as weapons. Black Widow fights back, getting some good hits in, but Bullseye outmaneuvers her and drops her chandelier on top of her. He captures Natasha, leaving a picture of her as a message for Daredevil. Speaking of, the next day, we find Matt Murdock and Heather Glenn visiting her father’s grave, while Foggy Nelson and the others awkwardly stand a little bit away. Heather wants Matt to promise that being Daredevil won’t get in the way of their relationship, but he can’t. She angrily slaps him and storms off, while Foggy and the others have no idea what happened.

Back at his apartment, Matt bemoans his situation with Heather, wishing their relationship could be more like a couple he spots outside (that look suspiciously like Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson). Matt wishes he had someone to talk to about the superhero life and decides to pay Natasha a visit. He makes his way across town to her apartment, immediately realizing something is wrong when he enters. Daredevil finds Bullseye’s message for him and later goes to see Ben Urich regarding Bullseye. Urich tells Daredevil about how Bullseye killed the psychiatrist overseeing him and escaped the psychiatric hospital he was being treated at in a stolen police cruiser. Daredevil leaves without a word, while Urich takes out a folder he has on Daredevil, cross-referenced under “M”, for Murdock.

Daredevil makes his way to Josie’s Bar to get any info he can on Bullseye. He goes undercover, asking a stoolie named Lark Logan for information. Turk overhears DD talking about Bullseye and Eric Slaughter and threatens the undercover Daredevil with a gun. Daredevil fights back and a full-on bar fight ensues, allowing him to slip away in the confusion. He changes to his costume and cuts the lights. Daredevil takes on the whole bar, while demanding any info that they can tell him about Bullseye. He throws the last couple guys out of the front window and tells Turk to let Bullseye know that he’s coming for him! To be continued!

Review / Commentaries

Daredevil #160 Review by (December 11, 2024)

Review: Bullseye captures Black Widow to use as bait for Daredevil! Some great action from the Bullseye/Black Widow showdown. Miller’s usual great art makes the fight very dynamic, as well as his creativity with the kinds of objects Bullseye uses as weapons (listed in the comments section). Bullseye fights are always great to see, and Miller has a particular affinity for them! We also get the debut of Josie, and more importantly, her bar, which will go on to be a regular hangout for criminals where Daredevil goes to get information. The case is no different here, leading, as always, to a full-on bar brawl! We also get the first instance of Josie’s window being smashed, when Daredevil throws a couple of guys through it, something that will become a running gag throughout Miller’s tenure! Overall, a cool issue heading for an intense showdown next issue!

Comments: First appearance of Josie and her infamous bar. The prologue is erroneously called the epilogue and vice versa. Sneaky guest appearances from Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson. The list of everyday objects Bullseye uses as a weapon this issue include a hairbrush, picture frame, vase, hair dryer, chandelier, microphone, and a smoking pipe.
