A Grave Mistake!

Synopsis

Daredevil #158 synopsis by Anthony Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

The Unholy Three have arrived to capture Matt Murdock! Foggy Nelson has already been knocked out, watched over by his girlfriend Debbie Harris. Black Widow does her best to stop the unholy Three from capturing Matt, while agonizing to herself that misfortune always seems to come to those closest to her. As they escape through the window, Matt and Foggy’s assistant, Becky Blake, beans the Bird Man with a desk sign, allowing Black Widow to take him out! The Ape Man and Cat Man leave their partner and make off for their destination with Matt. Heather Glenn, Matt’s girlfriend, implores Natasha to stay and help Foggy in any way she can, while subtly hinting that she knows Matt can take care of himself!

Ape-Man and Cat-Man make their way through the city with Matt until they come upon a cemetery. They tie Matt to a tombstone until their boss, Death-Stalker, arrives! He pays his two lackeys and indicates the fresh grave he’s dug for Matt, making his intentions quite clear. He reveals to Matt that he used to be the Exterminator, who Matt fought as Daredevil way back in Daredevil #68. Matt destroyed his machine, trapping him out of sync with regular time. After many other run-ins, he’s now planned his ultimate revenge! Death-Stalker kills his two henchmen with the cybernetic death grip attached to his gloves, purposely giving Matt enough time to escape his bonds! Matt changes to Daredevil and the two begin their final, intense battle!

Daredevil keeps out of the way of Death-stalker’s grip, realizing that he needs to solidify to attack, only striking when he’s solid. Daredevil continues to dodge until he ricochets his billy-club, smashing the nearby lamppost and throwing the cemetery into darkness. Daredevil uses the darkness to his advantage, striking at an off-balance Death-Stalker, until he tricks Death-Stalker into grabbing a statue in the darkness. Daredevil smashes his hands and bats him away, before making one last effort to try and reason with Death-Stalker. Death-Stalker ignores his offer and lunges forward in a blind rage, unaware of where he is, and solidifies partway through a tombstone! With his foe dead, Matt wearily makes his way back to his storefront law office to find everyone else leaving, including a healed Foggy. Matt starts to drift off, and thinks he hears Natasha, while it’s actually Becky, who thinks to herself that she’ll always be here for him.

Daredevil #158 Review by (November 27, 2024)

Review: Frank Miller’s tenure on Daredevil begins this issue! For now, he’s only the artist, but it won’t be too much longer before he becomes the writer as well. His art instantly elevates the title, bringing a cooler, darker look that will redefine the series and character, to this very day! The definitive era of Daredevil, that all future eras would draw from, begins here! The issue itself is pretty simple, mostly a fight between DD and Death-Stalker in a cemetery, but Miller’s art makes it look so crisp and stylish! The issue is mostly remembered for being Miller’s first issue, and for Death-Stalker’s pretty grisly death, than anything else. Still, a great start to Daredevil’s most influential and redefining era!

Comments: Frank Miller’s first issue working on Daredevil. Death of Death-Stalker. Death-Stalker refers to his first battle with Daredevil as the Exterminator, which occurred in Daredevil #68. The recap box mistakenly puts the location of Nelson and Murdock in the lower east side, even though Hell’s Kitchen is in the lower west side of Manhattan.
