Marked For Murder!

Synopsis

Daredevil #159 synopsis by Anthony Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

A mysterious man meets with Eric Slaughter and his men, showing them a video of Daredevil fighting Bullseye. The man hires them to study and kill Daredevil for the overall price of $500,000! The next day, Matt Murdock and Foggy Nelson arrive at the courthouse, while trying their best to dodge the press asking about Matt’s recent kidnapping from last issue. Nearby, Ben Urich thinks to himself that there’s more to Matt than meets the eye! Inside the courthouse, Matt and Foggy ask for an extension on their current hearing and are given one week. Later, on their way back to their law office, Matt and Foggy are accosted by Turk and another grunt. Knowing that Daredevil has done investigative work for Nelson and Murdock in the past, Turk threatens Matt to tell Daredevil to head to the pier at midnight, where Mr. Slaughter would like a word with him.

At midnight, Daredevil makes his way down to the pier. He gets close and stops, his senses alerting him to the ambush of guys waiting to kill him. Daredevil dives into the water in order to get a better vantage point and turns the tables on his would-be attackers, ambushing them instead! Daredevil takes care of a few guys before one knocks Daredevil and himself overboard. The rest open fire on the falling duo, without a care for their compatriot. In the water, Daredevil kicks the now dead thug holding him off of himself and swims back to the surface. Daredevil surprises the group of thugs once more, while demanding to know who put the hit out on him. Daredevil expertly disorients the thugs, taking them out one by one with style and effectiveness.

Finally, only Turk remains and Daredevil lunges down at him, knocking him out but causing Turk to fire his gun directly next to Daredevil’s ear! This causes Daredevil intense pain as his senses go all out of whack. He goes to confront the final man, who had been set on the pier as a decoy. He doesn’t run, even though his senses are still blurred, and the man points his gun at Daredevil and fires. Even with his radar sense off, Daredevil impressively hits the bullet out of the air with his club, before demanding answers from the man! Before he can talk, the man is killed by a life preserver thrown by another man that Daredevil senses has been recording the whole thing from a nearby boat. Later on, we see that the man that initially hired Slaughter and his men, and the one who has recorded the fight, was actually Bullseye himself! He plans to study the footage and when the time is right, he’ll kill Daredevil once and for all!

The issue also contains a one-page showcase on the ins and outs of Daredevil’s billy club.

Daredevil #159 Review by (December 4, 2024)

Review: We have yet another action-focused issue as a mysterious man puts a hit out on Daredevil! He hires Eric Slaughter, an old, retired mob boss, making his debut. Slaughter never really becomes very prominent (as Daredevil will soon encounter THE big mob boss), but he has surprising staying power, popping up every now and then in comics to this day. Most of the issue involves Daredevil fighting Slaughter’s men at the pier and Miller’s art once again shines and makes the issue. Miller really brings amazing dynamism to the action and choreography; it looks beautiful. Daredevil even has a particularly cool moment where he uses his club to smack a bullet out of the air! Sure, it might stretch believability but it’s cool so who cares? Ben Urich also starts to suspect something’s going on with Matt and the man who orchestrated everything turns out to be Bullseye (big surprise), with plans to kill Daredevil himself, once and for all!

Comments: First appearance of Eric Slaughter.
