Synopsis

Hawkeye: Freefall #4 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4.5 stars

Ronin/Clint Barton has been caught by Daredevil in the middle of a room full of dead Maggia soldiers. Clint explains they were killed by the Hood’s men who were looking for Ronin. DD suggest Clint should make a priority of hunting Ronin too…which totally confuses Clint since he is wearing Ronin’s armor. He wonders if Daredevil is blind but decides he was mistaken. DD invites him to the meeting of a hero task force the following night….

Hawkeye arrives at the rendezvous to find Winter Soldier, Falcon, and Night Thrasher watching outside a new Hood safe house, planning to capture Ronin when he shows up. He offers to watch the building from the other side and, when out of sight, he enters the building to take on the Hood and his men singlehandedly which almost gets him killed by the Hood’s supernatural powers but at least results in a serious beating….

Back at his basement base, Clint is trying to teach the LMD how to impersonate Ronin when Bryce arrives. Clint explains all of the plans he is pursuing to knock the Hood out of business but there’s one he didn’t know about; Bryce fills him in on the Hood’s bank, a completely honest business. Bryce also delivers a list of known aliens in the US….

Clint stops a subway street entertainer and forces him to reveal that he’s a Skrull; he then hires the guy for a mission….

Hawkeye attends the next mission of the task force at the docks, with Winter Soldier, Falcon, and Night Thrasher joined by Mockingbird, D-Man, U.S. Agent. They split up into teams with Clint joining U.S. Agent on patrol. As soon as they are out of sight, Clint knocks out Agent and joins the Skrull impersonating Ronin. Then the LMD arrives as Ronin so Hawkeye shoots it in the head and dumps it in the river. Clint has the Skrull hurriedly swap costumes with him so Clint/Ronin can get away—but he runs into Spider-Man who gives him a mild beating then unmasks him as Hawkeye, having spotted the LMD on its way over. Clint makes up a story that he is on a secret mission for Captain America…and pleads with Spidey to trust him. Spidey reluctantly agrees and leaves. Soon, the heroes give up the stakeout and the Skrull/Hawkeye joins the others but rouses suspicion as the Skrull doesn’t know that Mockingbird is Clint’s ex-wife and so talks to her without the personal banter. Skrull/Hawkeye heads home—and encounters Bullseye….

Review / Commentaries

Hawkeye: Freefall #4 Review by (September 14, 2020)

Review: And the Clint LMD turns out to be the funniest guy in the crazy issue. A hilarious exchange with Daredevil, some semi-comic sparring with the magical Hood, and a second round with Spidey. It’s all comic gold…so why did it have to be a Skrull impersonating Clint in the Ronin costume? One would think that any face would be better should the guy be unmasked. Such superhero schemes are beyond me.

Comments: Bryce christens Hawkeye’s new basement hideout the Fortress of Solid Dudes, which is a clever pun on Superman’s Fortress of Solitude but a real stinker to say out loud. Try it.
