Scorched Earth Part 4: Control

Synopsis

Hulk #28 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Sub-Mariner is out to destroy the Red Hulk for his alliance with the enemies of Earth but he hits him so hard that Red is hurled out of the water to land where Steve Rogers is waiting. Red reports on the mission status and Steve immediately jets him to his next mission, the island where they lost contact with A-Bomb (Rick Jones) ….

Bruce Banner has Fixer and Songbird set up a meeting with the former Leader, Samuel Sterns; Banner wants information about Scorched Earth but Sterns refuses to divulge anything unless he is transformed back into the Leader. Banner declines and goes to see George Tarleton, the former MODOK, to question him but any memory of his former identity upsets Tarleton greatly—and then Bruce notices what Tarleton is working with….

Red Hulk is dropped onto Monster Island, fighting vicious pterodactyl-like creatures on the way down. He sees the monsters heading for the whirlpool and discovers A-Bomb among them, with barnacle-like parasites that are controlling them. Red tries helping A and is kicked in the gut for his trouble, making him very angry that everyone has been fighting him since he joined the Scorched Earth mission. Rick tries to put a parasite on him but Red, literally hot with anger, is able to tear it off and also rip off the two on Rick. He then changes back to Thunderbolt Ross and cannot return to the Hulk form until he cools off. At a loss for what to do next, Rick calls Bruce Banner, who, having seen George Tarleton building a volcano from clay, thinks that the island’s volcano houses the control center. But the monsters also know about this and pursue the heroes. They head for the volcano, Rick trying to protect Ross as much as he can, when a yellow goop splashes onto A-Bomb, seeping into his armor and disabling him. And then the monsters catch up to General Ross….

Review / Commentaries

Hulk #28 Review by (July 27, 2020)

Review: Well, Subby punched Red out of the ocean and himself out of the issue. And A-Bomb finally gets to be the smart one, teamed with big, bad Ross; the action parts are pretty cool here and Bruce’s interactions with the two former bad guys is quite sharp. The oddest moment in the issue comes in the Watcher tale with a Watcher dude hitting on Uravo as she is trying to go about her mission. Even Watchers can be horndogs.

Comments: Second story marks the first appearance of Uravo the Watcher who will appear over the next several issues. The Watchers refer to Red Hulk hitting Uatu; it took place in issue #4 of this series. First (cameo) appearance by Emperor Mandarin, killed by Iron Man on his second appearance in IRON MAN #500. Other characters spotted by Uravo in her search for Uatu are Cyclops, Wolverine, The Hood, Galactus, and Moy-2515.
