Hulk #16 Review by (October 8, 2019)

Review: The cover is symbolic as the Maestro doesn't really appear but it's his frightening potential that has motivated everything Doc Green has done in the twelve-issue “Omega Hulk” storyline. The epic is wrapped up in a bittersweet fashion, with a touching regret from Doc Green, similar to the Tenth Doctor's “I don't want to go.” And there's a farewell to Jen, and a surprisingly goofy romantic moment with Betty and that classic final line. And even then the Lyra story goes all-out for farce even though we weren't particularly worried about her. Very nice ending to a very nice volume.

Comments: Final issue of the series, leading into the SECRET WARS event. Doc compares Bruce and Betty to “Sid and Nancy,” the star-crossed punk rock lovers Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen. Final appearances of Daman Veteri and Randall Jessup as of 2019. Lyra is shown to be back with her mother Thundra in SQUADRON SUPREME (2015 series) #15.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Hulk #16 Synopsis by Julio Molina-Muscara

In Brooklyn, Doc Green a/k/a/ the Hulk has been met by a force consisting of She-Hulk, Invisible Woman, Thor (Jane Foster), Captain America (Sam Wilson), Iron Man, and Vision, backed up by Maria Hill and a squadron of SHIELD Agents. He asks to speak to Jennifer alone; the others prepare to resist but Jen agrees to go with him into a nearby blockhouse. She asks what happened to Lyra; he tells her; she punches him through a wall. He explains that the rogue AI calling itself Gammon wants his body and he can't give it up; his Extremis treatment is slowly degrading and soon he will be back to Savage Hulk. He could take an Extremis supplement but there's something he fears even more: the Maestro. He can't take a chance on giving his hateful future self any advantages....

Doc and Jen go out and look that the skyline, him wishing he had more time. He assures Jen that he will find Lyra, checks his phone for the whereabouts of Gammon...and is interrupted by Betty Ross, his ex-wife. She asks to talk to Bruce Banner so Doc changes and she tries to apologize for having him shot (INDESTRUCTIBLE HULK #20) but he is distracted by his hunt for Gammon. She laughs and they kiss...and then he realizes “Wait. Did she say she had me shot?”

Synopsis: Daman Veteri and Randall Jessup have found the multiversal location where Lyra was sent by the rogue AI; now they arm themselves and set up protocols to bring her back and scramble the rift. The two arrive in a place populated by odd-looking aliens; in a panic they start shooting and are disarmed by a tentacled creature. Daman then moves to Plan B which is to inject Randall with a drug that unleashes his Inhuman side. They are captured by the tentacled creature and brought before the Empress who turns out to be Lyra. This was a nightmarish dimension until Lyra took over and banished the men. A high-five accidentally sends the three of them back to the present and Lyra is enraged that she can't return to her kingdom. Adjustments are made...Daman and Randall are now her slaves while they look for a way to send her back....
