Synopsis

Iron Man: Hypervelocity #5 synopsis by T Vernon
Rating: 4.5 stars
Inside the armor, Tony Stark 2.0 is a teenager recovering from a motorcycle crash and Absynthe, the avatar of the viral hackware, is about to beat him with a club….

Outside the armor, aboard the SHIELD Assault Carrier Samuel Sawyer, Major Tom Aramaki of the SHIELD Special Response Team Alpha, informally known as the Capekillers, and his team see the Iron Man armor opened up and flipping around in the air above the sea. They open fire, cutting up the armor, which fights back effectively. Inside, Absynthe takes control of Tony 2.0 and, recreates herself as an Avengers team, holding him down while “Thor” beats him with the hammer. As “herself,” Absynthe continues to beat up the “armor” while mocking Tony’s obsessions and flaws, including his alcoholism and his womanizing ways. The real armor dodges the SHIELD missiles and survives the explosive fireballs as the villainous avatar kicks and stomps Tony 2.0 until he finally appears at a bar and she feeds him absinth, her namesake liquor, and Tony passes out and dies—and then she realizes that while she has been deleting Tony Stark from his memory space, he has been overwriting hers and now he is in control of Absynthe and they are locked together; if the armor is destroyed they are both dead. The armor, earlier set on course by the villainess, boards the SHIELD carrier and Absynthe has the enemy mecha called Beautiful Garbage (seen in issue #2) invade the ship as well….

Review / Commentaries

Iron Man: Hypervelocity #5 Review by (July 15, 2022)
Comments: On the cover, Absynthe appears as versions of Iron Man, Thor (note the inscription on the hammer), Captain America, Hawkeye, Vision, Yellowjacket, and Beast. The story inside subtracts Yellowjacket and adds Tigra, Wonder Man, and Hercules.

Review: As the armor is shelled from without, inside there is a battle to the death between Absynthe and Tony Stark 2.0; this is the most intense section of the entire miniseries and her verbal violence nearly burns up the page. Major Aramaki and his group, despite being responsible for all of the real world action, almost fade into the background, unaware of the real battlefield. Still pretty cool.
