The new Goliath, Eric Josten, is a prisoner inside an adamantium cage at West Coast Avengers HQ in California, dreaming of escape and running up the Avengers' food bills. Hawkeye and Mockingbird receive a visit from Josten's lawyer Runyon Castle who demands that his client be released....

At an airfield, an A.I.M. flunky sabotages Tony Stark's new space shuttle. Soon Jim Rhodes and Tony stop by, Rhodey planning to take the craft out for a spin while Tony is concerned about Rhodey's recovery from his injuries (issue #199). Later Tony meets with Clytemnestra Erwin about joining his new team but she mentions another job offer....

Lawyer Castle returns to West Coast Avengers HQ with a court order and a couple of police officers. Reluctantly, Hawkeye turns Goliath over to them and the police take him away in their car. Suddenly the car smashes open as Goliath grows to his 50-foot size and attacks the two heroes. They lure him to the beach and send out a call for help to the other Avengers. Iron Man arrives and blasts the giant baddie and a massive battle breaks out between the two. Meanwhile, in space the shuttle malfunctions and Rhodey calls Iron Man for help. Making a split-second decision, Shellhead locks Hawkeye and Mockingbird in the adamantium cage for protection and jets off into space. He guides the shuttle to the ground and zips back to the coast to find Goliath has tossed the cage into the ocean. Iron Man rescues his teammates and rejoins battle against the colossal foe. He finally defeats the thick-skinned Goliath by firing pulse bolts into the giant's open mouth, leaving him (almost) ready to deliver to the police in the adamantium cage.

Epilogue: In a cage of his own, Yorgon Tykkio broods over vengeance....

Iron Man #206 Review by (October 31, 2016)
Comments: Eric Josten became the third Goliath (and first villainous one) in IRON MAN ANNUAL #7; he's appeared in CAPTAIN AMERICA #308 and WEST COAST AVENGERS #1-3 between then and now.

Review: A big fight scene is freshened by a worthy foe, the powerful giant Goliath, an interesting background (a beach), and some very nice Hawkeye/Mockingbird banter. They bring a nice little spark to the series. And it's a standalone story, with a subplot (the sabotage of the space shuttle) that can also be lifted from the context. Rhodey has some character moments as he attempts to live outside the shadow of Iron Man, even making the misguided decision to not take the old armor along; this leads, of course, to him being further indebted to Tony which was the opposite of his desires. Plus, there's a shady mechanic who has a favorite wrench! One thing I'm still pondering: why is the story called “Prisons" i.e. the plural. Obviously Goliath's adamantium cage counts but what is the second one? Hawkeye and Mockingbird stuck in the cage? Not enough is made of it for any thematic resonance. Rhodey in the trapped shuttle? Or in his past identity as Iron Man ?Nah, there's no parallels drawn there. Yorgon Tykkio locked up? Nah, no one cares about him. That's what happens when the title sounds more profound than it is: I have to put a lot of thought into it to decide it wasn't worth the effort. But then I'm a comic book fan so sue me.
