Marvel Feature #10 Review by (January 2, 2024)

Review: Mad scientist blackmails Ant-Man into robbing the Avengers. Brief and to the point. It’s a nice tale, and the size-shifting battle between the hero and villain would look really cool on film. And we won’t ask how Dr. Nemesis was able to construct an underground lab under a trailer within sight of Hank Pym’s home, though he may have done it himself, which would require him to ignore many safety codes. And we won’t ask whether Tony Stark felt ashamed of himself for doing as little as possible to find Hank and Janet. But we will ask what the original ending to the story was. The last two pages are clearly truncated with some of the action being relegated to a panel full of exposition yet the issue had to be filled out with 1950s horror story reprints. Alas, we’ll never know. (Clearly it was a set-up to the next issue in this Ant-Man series cancelled with this issue.) It was a fun series though.

Comments: Last appearance of Ant-Man and Wasp in this title; they rejoin the Avengers in AVENGERS #137 though their next appearance is in CAPTAIN MARVEL #35. Doctor Nemesis is next seen seeking revenge against Wasp in MICRONAUTS #42 then against Hank Pym in SOLO AVENGERS #8. Second story: Reprinted from MYSTIC #35. Third story: Reprinted from MYSTIC #14.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Marvel Feature #10 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Ant-Man and Wasp have been captured by mad scientist Doctor Nemesis who spends an entire day subjecting them to sinister lab tests. At the end, Ant-Man demands to know what Nemesis is doing and the answer is simple: he has cured Hank of being stuck at his tiny size. Hank then realizes Doc N must have been a member of M’Sieu Tete’s gang in issue #4 to have been aware of his problem. The baddie then reveals his reasons for helping the hero: Doc N now expects Ant-Man to steal secrets from Avengers Mansion for him—or Jan will die. The bad guy provides Hank with size-changing clothing and then reveals that he was able to duplicate Hank’s formula so Doctor Nemesis also has the ability to shrink or grow. The villain takes Ant-Man through a lengthy tunnel, secretly constructed and maintained by A.I.M., which leads directly under Avengers Mansion. Ant-Man then tricks Doc N into turning off his protective force field lest he be detected by Avengers security devices. Once he does, Ant-Man attacks him and there follows an amazing battle in which both hero and villain are constantly changing sizes until Ant-Man stands victor. He removes the size-changing tech from Doc N’s headgear and grows to full size to alert the Avengers (Black Panther, Captain America, Iron Man, Vision) that he is still alive. He promises to give them a full account of his adventures later and, after rescuing Jan, they decline an offer to rejoin the team. Later, as he tries to write up the account, Jan distracts him with a promise of “romance” and he takes her to bed….
