Death to the Beyonder

Synopsis

Marvel Super-Heroes Secret Wars #10 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 3 stars
The heroes watch in horror as Galactus’ worldship vanishes, yielding up its energy to be absorbed by its master. Suddenly, the energy is diverted in the direction of Doombase. Captain America dispatches Captain Marvel, the fastest among them, to reconnoiter. Seconds later she arrives to see the energy passing through a series of huge lenses to penetrate the body of Doctor Doom. Back at the village, Professor X uses his psychic abilities to enable Reed Richards to see through her eyes to understand what is happening. Doom, with the powers of Galactus, finds he is now omnipotent and omniscient, possessing an empathy with all things…and he detects the presence of the spy. When the link through Marvel is suddenly cut off, the assembled heroes, including the X-Men and Magneto, hurry to Doombase. There, Doom is preparing for himself an energy-draining weapon with which to challenge the Beyonder. When the heroes arrive, they find Captain Marvel frozen into a living hologram, and Klaw’s disembodied head. The villain fragment explains where Doom is as a massive shockwave shakes the planet. Doom is challenging the Beyonder face-to-face. The heroes narrowly evade the falling debris as further shocks rend the building. In space, Doom is engaged in a furious cosmic battle with the Beyonder and is nearly overwhelmed. During a lull in the combat, Doom appears to the heroes and appeals to them to lend their power to his to defeat their common enemy. Magneto steps forward to take Doom’s hand but is prevented by the intervention of some Avengers. Captain America halts a fight between the X-Men and the others by pointing out that all were tempted to accept Doom’s offer and Magneto was about to stop himself anyway. In space the Beyonder defeats his foe and examines Doom, reading his mind and stripping him of his armor, learning all he can. Then Doom changes…. As Doombase collapses, the heroes release the imprisoned villains and flee to safety. Outside they behold as a form appears in the sky above the—it is the now-gigantic Doctor Doom. As the heroes gear up for the battle of their lives, Doom shrinks to their size and explains that the Beyonder is no more and Doom has been reborn: the war is over. Then he removes his mask….

Review / Commentaries

Marvel Super-Heroes Secret Wars #10 Review by (July 26, 2011)
Review: Full review appears with issue #1.

Comments: Final appearance of Galactus in the series. Many villains are absent for this issue including Dr. Octopus, the Enchantress, Molecule Man, Titania, Volcana, and Bulldozer of the Wrecking Crew. Oddest moment: Doctor Doom quotes the Bible (Psalm 23:4). Explanations: Iron Man is Jim Rhodes, Hulk has Bruce Banner’s mind, Professor X can walk.

Marvel Super-Heroes Secret Wars #10 Review by (July 26, 2011)
Dr Doom looks more like his Mattel figure after he transforms himself with Galactus' energy.
He also builds into his new breastplate some Galactus tech to absorb the Beyonder's energy. Later as Beyonder removes Doom's armour and starts to dissect him Victor activates the breastplate.
Doom says he's killed Beyonder but of course he'll be back before the end of the series. He's got Secret Wars II to do.

What have the left-behind Avengers (Mockingbird, Scarlet Witch, Starfox and Vision) been doing while the rest of their team has been away? Appearing in Fantastic Four #265 where pregnant Invisible Girl has been staying with them at Avengers Mansion. And SW and Vision cameoed in Spectacular Spider-Man #90 where Black Cat has been searching for SM/Peter Parker. Most of Avengers #243 is spent with the team still awaiting the heroes return.
Also in FF#265 Alicia Masters has secretly been replaced by Skrull Lyja. For the sake of her impersonation it's probably lucky that Thing doesn't return at the end of the issue, and instead the FF have pinched She-Hulk from the Avengers.
Code Of Honor #3 detailed a supercrime spree that happened while the heroes were away, combated by the police and the remaining heroes. And the 1st half of Marvel Team-Up #141 saw Black Widow and Daredevil dealing with a case that Spidey's disappearance had left half-finished.
