Story Name:

Mission 010: Brooklyn

Synopsis

Secret Avengers #10 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

The Terrigen Bomb was detonated. Sarah Garza of Park Slope, Brooklyn, New York, bursts out of a cocoon and discovers her skin is now dead white with a reddish mask shape around her eyes. Nausea convulses her and her body emits a flash of plasma energy which destroys her house and several surrounding it….

The incident is reported to acting-SHIELD Director Maria Hill, who, learning that Sarah worked for the Agency as a computer expert, has her brought in. Hill talks to Sarah who is certain she is in serious trouble but then catches on that Hill is making her a field agent to help combat Thanos’ invasion of Earth. Sarah is put in a special Stark-designed suit to contain and focus her energy bursts and is turned over to Iron Patriot for a very rushed training session. Rhodey takes her out to the Brooklyn battlefield where they are to support Nick Fury Jr. and Phil Coulson fighting the invading monsters. And the fleet of Iron Patriot drones accompanies them. Sarah is scared on the battlefield but her powers manifest, pouring out of her hands straight up, incinerating some of the drones. She then points at the enemy and a huge energy blast destroys a lot of them, along with a great deal of property. Fury reports to Hill that Sarah did well for a first try and Coulson jokes about choosing her superhero name—and suggesting “The Invigilator.” Then a mental attack knocks Rhodey out of the sky, then the drones start dropping. Sarah unleashes a blast to destroy a drone that is about to fall on her. Then cables burst up through the ground and entangle her and the men. A cadaverous bald man in a hospital gown surrounded by floating junk accuses them of bringing the chaos to their neighborhood and assures them they will pay….

Secret Avengers #10 Review by (February 27, 2024)

Review: Yes, it’s an INFINITY tie-in but knowledge of the big event is not necessary for following this two-part tale. The Terrigen Bomb is all one needs to know, the bad guys can be any big crisis-level force. The real interest here is seeing SHIELD through the eyes of a rookie: Sarah Garza is an IT person who suddenly acquires a superpower and is forced into action unprepared because Maria Hill, not the most sensitive of employers, is desperate for another hand on deck and so tosses the panicked Sarah into the thick of the action. Her shift from terror to elation and through many other unstable sentiments makes her a rather endearing heroine and we root for her, finally cheering when she masters her plasma bolts and captures the villainous Junkman—only to see him killed by a more experienced, hard-headed agent. She then realizes this life isn’t for her and Maria Hill, still not the most sensitive of employers, has her locked up until they can think of an alternate way to exploit Sarah’s malady. Personal tragedy is marked by bitter irony. A very moving pair of issues.

Comments: “Infinity tie-in.” Falls between INFINITY #5 and 6; the Terrigen Bomb was activated in INFINITY #3. Part one of two parts. First appearance/origin of Sarah Garza. First appearance of the Junkman of Brooklyn. Maria Hill’s reference to a fifty-foot-tall naked man directs the reader to AVENGERS ASSEMBLE #20. And an Invigilator is an official who supervises candidates during an examination.
