How to MA.I.M. a Mockingbird Part Five of Five

Synopsis

Secret Avengers #16 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

On A.I.M. Island, the Scientist Supreme (Andrew Forson) surveys the carnage left by the Secret Avengers’ escape. He tries to contact Yelena Belova but she doesn’t answer (we know she’s dead and her body is in Avengers’ possession). He orders his people to go after the sub and learns that the Avengers have destroyed the four pursuit craft. He gives orders to assemble a kill squad and in return is informed that A.I.M. bases all over the world are being shut down by SHIELD (based on the information MODOK gave to Maria Hill). Then in the passageway, Forson is confronted by the injured Mockingbird. He tries to convince her she is “Barbara” and his ally; she responds that there is something “Barbara” and “Bobbi” have in common: they hate him. She beats him to a pulp but while she is crouched over him, he pulls out a knife and stabs her in the hip. They struggle over the knife and she ends up flipping him off the walkway. She lies still a moment to gather her strength then she gets up and walks away….

In the morgue, Taskmaster awakens from his deep coma; Mentallo has left a note explaining that he doesn’t know how TM is still alive and rambles about nanobots while encouraging TM to take advantage of this second chance….

Aboard the SHIELD Helicarrier Iliad, Director Maria Hill and MODOK are negotiating the size of his new lab and staff. She assures him she will uncover his scheme but he assures her that he knows when he has lost and finds solace in knowing that he and Hill are similar….

Maria Hill then meets with the Secret Avengers. Because of what happened to Bobbi, Hawkeye announces he is quitting the team. Rhodey also wants to quit over the lack of oversight, concerned there was too much they were not being told. Hill accepts this and tells them the operation will be modified and she is okay with their leaving. She has just one more word: “Reverie,” wiping everyone’s minds….

At a chicken restaurant, Mockingbird walks past a bunch of beaten neo-Nazis and enters to join Daisy Johnson and Winter Soldier. Bobbi is introduced to the sole staffer, Martha. They leave before the police come, handing to Martha a cache of Nazi money and Bobbi points out they are free agents, they can go anywhere….

Review / Commentaries

Secret Avengers #16 Review by (April 30, 2024)

Review: And the series wraps up with Maria Hill erasing memories while the team line-up is in for a change. And we do discover what comes next, there is another volume coming soon. Mockingbird’s fight with Forson is very nicely done with kudos to the colorist for making it all stand out so clearly—as well as transforming Bobbi into a much happier person for the last page. Maria Hill has learned nothing from the experience, making her one of the most villainous “good guys” in Marvel. See you at volume 3….

Comments: Mockingbird’s next appearance is in CAPTAIN AMERICA (2013) #25. Daisy Johnson and Bucky Barnes go together into BUCKY BARNES: THE WINTER SOLDIER. Rhodey goes off to IRON PATRIOT. Taskmaster next shows up at Deadpool’s wedding in DEADPOOL (2013) #27 then in ALL-NEW CAPTAIN AMERICA #1-3. Scientist Supreme (Andrew Forson) moves on to AVENGERS (2013) #27-28. Mentallo turns up in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: FAMILY BUSINESS. Most of the rest (including Hawkeye) go straight into SECRET AVENGERS (Vol. 3) #1 with a brief detour or two. Nick Spencer and Ales Kot are credited as writers; Kot provides an essay about his work on the series, introducing the next volume for which he is sole writer.
