A.D. 893: after a night of sport with a pair of shieldmaidens, Thor is awakened by the voice of Gorr the God Butcher. Realizing his foe is still alive, the brash young Thunder God is attacked by the living shadows of the night and hurled out into the snow. A Black Berserker hurls a violet crystal at him and Thor is transported to a glowing purple lake where Gorr welcomes him to the place where gods go to die. A huge black arm seizes him and drags him to the future where he is tortured and enslaved by the sadistic God Butcher….
The present day Thor arrives in the far future Asgard where he is met by the aged Thor (whom he mistakes at first for Odin); the future Thor explains that he is the sole survivor of the attacks of the God Butcher and is now All-Father. Now that the 900-year siege by Gorr’s Black Berserkers has been lifted, the two Thors prepare for battle, with the younger hero being directed to Odin’s mead stores for some fortifying power. Old Thor reveals that all the other Aesir have been enslaved by the God Butcher and now, with the arrival of his young counterpart, the aged god is revitalized for the coming battle. They board the magic ship Skithbladnir to sail across the cosmic seas….
In Omnipotence City, the Nexus of all the Gods, the God of the Watch scolds the Librarian for permitting his domain to be invaded by Gorr’s minions (issue #4) but otherwise knows nothing of the fate of Thor. The Librarian questions Shadrak, the defeated amphibian god rescued by Thor in issue #3, and the poor deity lets slip that he was forced to aid Gorr in his wicked schemes. Incessant interrogation by the angry Librarian soon compels the evasive Shadrak to confess that he is the God of ...Bombs.
Captive young Thor arrives at Gorr’s lair to see a massive spherical weapon: the GodBomb….
