Synopsis

Uncanny X-Men, The (1981 series) #205 synopsis by reviewer Anthony Silvestro
Rating: 5 stars

At a place called the Body Shop, Lady Deathstrike goes through a terrifying, painful transformation. She has cybernetic enhancements grafted to her, becoming a cyborg, much like her compatriots, Reese, Cole, and Macon. Each of them looks to get revenge on the man they hate most: Wolverine! The procedure is overseen by Spiral, who reveals that Deathstrike now has healing and claws to rival her hated foe. They thank Spiral for her help, who wishes them luck, not expecting them to come out unscathed after choosing to dance with the devil…

Some time later, in lower Manhattan, Katie Power and her caretaker Miss Randolph look to rejoin their caroling group after using the bathroom, when a violent blizzard erupts out of nowhere! Katie is knocked to the ground by one of the armed cyborgs and gets lost in the blizzard. She then spots a figure through all the snow, coming upon a wounded Wolverine! The police arrive not long after and Katie thinks she’s saved, when Wolverine instinctually grabs her and runs! She fires off an energy blast that stops them both in their tracks. She tries talking to Wolverine but he’s so hurt, he’s unable to talk, merely growling like a wounded animal. She manages to get him to stand to trudge through the snow, as his attackers are still after them. The two come upon a cab and they pile in, hoping to escape the ones after Wolverine. However, Wolverine pops his claws and throws both the driver and Katie out of the cab, just as it’s shot by a high-caliber weapon.

Wolverine runs through the flames, and once again grabs Katie and runs, the two tumbling down a snowy hill. As they land hard at the bottom, Wolverine starts to slowly regain more self awareness, speaking in Japanese, though having no idea who he is. He lets out a pained howl and Katie tries to comfort him. Slowly, Wolverine is finally able to speak again, his healing factor having been able to heal his mind enough to remember who he is. Lady Deathstrike and the others continue their pursuit, while Wolverine and Katie duck behind some cover. Wolverine thanks Katie for giving him the time to heal and asks her to trust him and stay put.

Wolverine heads out to deal with his attackers once and for all, getting the drop on Cole and Reese in the blinding snow. He finally faces down Lady Deathstrike and she determines to free herself of her late father’s burdens by finally killing Wolverine. The two engage in a brutal, savage fight, with Lady Deathstrike out for blood. Wolverine determines that he’s not dying today and flies into a rage, slashing at Deathstrike over and over until she lies in the snow, defeated. He snaps out of it, hating her for making him revert to his former animalistic nature that he tried so hard to break free from. She begs him to kill her, to set her free of her burdens but he refuses, telling her she must earn her freedom, through an honorable death or otherwise! As the blizzard lifts, Wolverine returns to where he left Katie, having had her cover her eyes and ears to remain blissfully unaware of the brutality going on. They agree to be there when the other needs help, and Wolverine and Katie head home.

Uncanny X-Men, The (1981 series) #205 Review by (September 17, 2025)

Review: Last issue we had a solo Nightcrawler story and this time we have a solo Wolverine one! This one is a real knockout, shockingly brutal and grim and intense! Wolverine spends much of the issue wounded and running, being helped by Katie Power who he just happened to run into (because of course Wolverine ends up mutually helping a young girl). The issue then culminates in a fight for the record books with Lady Deathstrike, extremely savage and personal, certainly making this the most violent issue of Uncanny X-Men by far up to this point! Barry Windsor-Smith’s art through all of this is detailed, hectic, and grizzly, and perfectly sets the tone for this issue, in addition to Lady Deathstrike’s chaotic narration. The blizzard raging throughout the issue is used as a nice metaphor, adding to the hecticness when things are their worst, and only clearing once everything’s over and the danger’s passed. There’s also a nice parallel between Wolverine and Deathstrike, as he spends the issue trying to regain his humanity while choosing to put the past behind him, while her obsession with her past causes her to sacrifice her own humanity. This issue is overall a perfect mix of stylish, brutal, grim, and poetic, much like Wolverine himself, perfectly encapsulating the character in a single issue!

Comments: Lady Deathstrike receives the cybernetic enhancements she’s known for in this issue. Wolverine and Lady Deathstrike first encountered each other in Alpha Flight #33-34. Deathstrike’s three compatriots are three of the Hellfire Club guards that Wolverine sliced up back in UXM #133 (and who returned in #152).
