Story Name:

Fear Itself, Chapter 2: A God-Awful Small Affair

Synopsis

Avengers Academy (2010 series) #16 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Synopsis: In Dubai, Giant-Man is fighting the Absorbing Man, possessed by Greithoth, Breaker of Wills, and grown to giant-size himself. Meanwhile, Titania is now Skirn, Breaker of Men, fighting the rest of Hank’s team, smashing through Justice’s shielding; Quicksilver spins around her but he is easily knocked out of synch by a hammer strike to the ground. GM hoists Creel over his head but the baddie has absorbed Hank’s growing ability to keep growing larger—and Hank can’t drop him without devastating the city. Creel then wraps GM in his hammer’s chain and tosses the hammer on him so that it takes him down like Mjolnir would. As Hank shrinks to escape the trap, Creel smashes another huge building, killing thousands. Hank tears up evacuated buildings to make a doorway then calls Jocasta to send Creel through; he holds on long enough to touch hammers with Titania, unlashing destruction and then they are both gone, hurled into the Arctic. Hank collapses into the river….

In Washington, Veil sees a little girl in danger and pulls her away from falling rubble. She asks the child where her mother is and she points to the ruined building. Veil takes her gaseous form and explores the wreckage; she finds the injured mother at the bottom and revives her; Veil gives her a pep talk to get her to help push their way out of the ruins. They reach the surface and the mother runs to her daughter—only to be shot down by a Nazi war machine. Veil invades the machine and asphyxiates the operator. But all she can say to the little girl is “I’m sorry….”

Review / Commentaries

Peter Silvestro
Avengers Academy (2010 series) #16 Review by (October 22, 2024)

Review: A more focused episode in this event tie-in with only two stories, one on a giant scale, the other a more intimate moment. All of the action is in the Giant-Man versus Absorbing Man half of the comic and boggles the mind as well it should. The other, Veil saving a woman’s life only to see her die senselessly is a heartbreaker. Sure, both manipulate the emotions to get s desired effect but isn’t that what comics are about? Not to mention all of the other arts? Well, that turned philosophical in a hurry! So let’s move on!

Comments: Issue bannered FEAR ITSELF, as a tie-in to that event. Part two of six parts. Story takes place between FEAR ITSELF #3 and 4. Title comes from “Life on Mars?” by David Bowie. Of the six issues that tie in to FEAR ITSELF, this is the only one that reflects that fact in the title.
