Black Widow #3 Review by (February 9, 2021)

Review: Oh, it’s the BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES episode “Perchance to Dream!” The one where Mad Hatter traps Batman in a happy fantasy world! If you’re going to rip off a B:TAS episode, might as well pick one of the best. Anyway, we’re finally let into the solution to the mystery and it’s pretty clever (thanks, Joe R. Lansdale!). The story also features some brilliance by Yelena Belova and some comedy by Hawkeye. The action sequences, especially that two-page spread wherein Natasha’s Black Widow skills kick in and she takes down a gang, are excellent. Enjoying this series greatly.

Comments: Weeping Lion was the villain in BLACK WIDOW (2016 series) where he apparently died. Snapdragon was introduced in MARVEL FANFARE #12-13 as Black Widow’s nemesis; she went on to be part of Superia’s Femizons in CAPTAIN AMERICA #388 and following, then battled Moon Knight in his 2011 series. The title page recap mentions Red Guardian though he doesn’t appear until this issue.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Black Widow #3 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Natalie Grey, formerly Natasha Romanoff, is living the dream life as an architect with a loving fiancé, an adorable kid, and a cool motorcycle. Meanwhile, Hawkeye and Winter Soldier are keeping an eye on her, wondering what to do since she’s happy but they have no idea who did this to her or why and she could be in danger. They are approached by Yelena Belova, the second Black Widow, who has been observing Natasha as the babysitter Helen; Belova also knows that the child is the natural offspring of Natasha and James, despite being a year old though Nat has been gone for only three months. She tells the guys to hold back until she learns more….

Natalie is being fitted for a wedding gown when Helen (Belova, remember?) stops by to talk to her. Natalie is crying because she has the perfect life yet somehow it all seems wrong, like something is missing….

She is being watched from a control room by a cadre of villains: Viper, Red Guardian, Arcade, Weeping Lion, and Snapdragon. They have set up this mind trap for Black Widow to keep her off the board; now Weeping Lion wants to kill her but Viper says that will jeopardize this plan that is working. But WL reveals things are already in motion….

Natalie returns to a darkened home that night but senses something wrong; she enters warily and is ambushed by a gang which she takes out in a single fluid motion. When she hears a thug speaking Russian giving the order to kill the hostages, she goes over the top, crashing through a window to take down the killer with makeshift weapons, while setting off the bomb. Then the implant in her head seemingly fries her brain while Viper threatens Weeping Lion….
