Synopsis

Captain America (2012 series) #13 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 3.5 stars

1969: At a SHIELD hub station, Nick Fury and Dum Dum Dugan interview Agent Ran Shen who was assigned to go undercover in Mao’s government in Red China. Ran explains that secrecy kept him from reporting in but Fury does not believe him. As shackles secure Ran to a chair, Fury reveals that they know Ran has been won over to the Communists and has had to flee after a failed plot to unseat Mao. Ran releases wires from his chest which shock the two agents into unconsciousness and he escapes to search for a mysterious goal. In the secret room he clashes with the Winter Soldier who has also infiltrated the facility and SHIELD agents drive them off. Fury wonders what they wanted in a room marked "Weapon Minus."

Today, Sam "Falcon" Wilson is concerned about Steve’s burning all the mementoes of his past but Jet Black defends his decision. Maria Hill contacts Sam to tell him Captain America is needed to fight the rogue super-soldier Nuke who is slaughtering people in the Eastern European nation of Nrosvekistan in the name of America. Though Sam was hoping Steve can recover from his losses a little more, Hill says that only Captain America can save the nation’s reputation…

In Nrosvekistan, undercover Bugle reporter Samantha Chan is filming Nuke and hoping to get her film past the SHIELD-induced information blackout. Suddenly Captain America appears with the Falcon to battle the mad villain. Cap and the Falcon give it everything they’ve got but they aren’t able to stop Nuke who is under the control of the Iron Nail. Redwing snatches up one of the bad guy’s grenades and drops it on him; Nuke walks through the blast unscathed….

Review / Commentaries

Captain America (2012 series) #13 Review by (November 9, 2013)
Review: Okay tale, too bad the best part is the opening flashback which promises more excitement that the main story as we learn that the Iron Nail is a former SHIELD Agent (mentioned briefly last issue) and the there is a dangerous weapon lying around—or at least there was in 1969. For the rest of it, it’s mostly a big fight scene, and not an inspired one, with the revelation that maybe Jet Black Zola can’t be trusted (well, duh—why else is she in the book if she’s not going to cause trouble?). The cameo by Winter Soldier is nice but adds nothing to the story. So far nothing from the new arc has grabbed me but at least I’m not scratching my head in astonishment as I did with the Dimension Z story.

Comments: Nick Fury, Dum Dum Dugan, Iron Nail, and Winter Soldier appear only in the opening flashback. Ran Shen was called Ran Shon in issue #12. The solicit claims this is the first appearance of the Iron Nail but we saw him last issue.
