God of Hammers Finale

Synopsis

Thor (2020 series) #23 synopsis by reviewer Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

A flashback to when Thor had just gained possession of Mjolnir and Odin was training him how to use it, mainly by saying, “Keep your eyes open, boy” as Thor narrowly avoided being hit in the face by his hammer. Thor has many questions about Mjolnir, including whether it is true that the souls of the Dwarves who died making it are imprisoned in the hammer; Odin tells him to leave all that for another time, for now it’s “Keep your eyes open, boy.” Thor asks if even Odin can die; Odin replies that he will become what he has always been: a legend….

Now Thor, with the full Odin-Power granted him by the death of his father, fights back against the Mjolnir/Mangog creature that calls itself the God of Hammers, breaking his sword on it. He calls to Sif for her sword and she drops it down to him. He also summons the Rainbow Bridge itself to bind his enemy and he calmly takes his hammer from its hand. He then transports them to Nidavellir, to the forge where Mjolnir was created and he slowly unmakes the hammer, smashing it into little pieces. When he is done, only the handle remains. Thor then collapses in a faint….

Four months later, Thor wakes up to find Freyja, Angela, and Loki at his bedside. Thor jumps up, needing to bury Odin but he is told there was no body to be found; they can hold a memorial but that can be any time. Bitter Thor claims he does not need anyone but Freyja reminds him that they all need him. Angela, dismissive, tells him to go to the armory. There he finds Mjolnir pieced back together. Thor falls to his knees and prays to Odin that he can’t see his path. The voice of Odin issues from the hammer saying, “Keep your eyes open, boy….”

Thor (2020 series) #23 Review by (March 9, 2022)

Review: An intensely emotional wrap-up to the “God of Hammers” arc would have been more effective had they not spent years making Odin so unlikable. Thor goes through a physical and emotional ringer once more and ends up confused. And Odin is now in the hammer, which is one way to keep a dead character close, I guess. It isn’t clear what happened to the personified Mjolnir merged with Mangog but I suppose that will be sprung on us at a later date, when there’s another shocking, intense story arc. For now, it’s okay.
