Thor #329 Review by (July 7, 2020)

Review: A happy ending for a bad guy? Why not? He’s not such a bad bad guy, especially since we didn’t see him at all during the Asgardian civil war, no atrocities or slaughter or anything like that. In fact, he was a halfway decent fellow for a giant. And Sif is mostly behaving herself in this rather pedestrian issue. The big mystery is…who is looking for Don Blake and why did he hire a private detective as Don must have left a forwarding address at every Manhattan hospital since he is, y’know, a world-famous surgeon? More on this later, though not much later since the coming of Walt Simonson is on the horizon.

Comments: Sole appearance of Hrungnir who was taken from authentic Norse myth; though he was part of the battle in issue #327, he was not seen in that issue.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Thor #329 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Hrungnir the storm giant awakens, wounded and alone, at the site of the battle with the Norse gods and realizes he has been abandoned by his allies. Aware that only Thor can send him back home, he questions a workman who tells him that Thor now resides in Chicago and directs him to a truck headed there. Hrungnir stows away for the long ride….

In Chicago, Dr. Donald Blake is still wondering why Sif did not transform into Jane Foster when she arrived in Midgard; meanwhile, Sif is impatient with the subway so she teleports to Don’s hospital where she causes a commotion just by her appearance. A quarrel with security guards threatens to turn ugly but Don appears and hustles the lady warrior out. Back home, she can’t see why Thor has to take on a human disguise while he hopes that she can come to love Earth as much as he. Then Sif and Shawna Lynde meet accidentally and Don tries to pass her off as his visiting cousin and asks Shawna to take her clothes shopping. Things get awkward….

As the truck passes by a railyard, the famished Hrungnir smells cattle in a nearby train car and bursts out from hiding and tears into the car, seeking to make a meal of a cow. Overhead, Thor is taking Sif on a flying tour of the city when they notice the ruckus and go down to investigate. Thor sends Sif to round up the escaping cattle while he faces the giant, who, delirious from his wounds, thinks he has been seeking Thor out to kill him. After some thunderous clashing, Hrungnir suddenly collapses and Thor discovers that his enemy is seriously wounded and feverish. He flies him to Lake Michigan to place him in its cold waters then he heads to Don’s office to pick up a load of penicillin. The giant is quickly cured and he explains that his intent was to ask Thor to send him home. [And at this point, we see a private eye report back to a mysterious client that he has found Dr. Don Blake in Chicago.] Thor asks him to swear to abide by the recent truce and spins Mjolnir carrying him to his destination. Thor and Sif hug but she knows she will never fit in on Earth….
