Story Name:

The Abomination!

Synopsis

Tales to Astonish #90 synopsis by Julio Molina-Muscara
Rating: 4.5 stars

Controlled by the Stranger, Hulk rampages through populations. When he arrives at Thunderbolt Ross base, he transforms into Bruce Banner and breaks free from the alien’s control.

Horrified by the damage he did as the Hulk, Banner kills himself with a gamma rays overdose! But before he can do it, soldiers spot him and take him prisoner.

A spy called Emil Blonsky witnessed it all and uses the gamma equipment onto himself. The radiation turns him into a powerful green monster like the Hulk, the one to be named Abomination.

When Banner sees the new gamma-spawned being, he turns into the Hulk and fights him. But the Abomination proves to be stronger than the Hulk, and defeats him!

Finally, the Abomination kidnaps Betty Ross and leaps away.

Story #2

To Be Beaten by Byrrah!

Synopsis

By Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Credits: Writer: Stan Lee. Pencils: Bill Everett. Inks: Bill Everett. Colors: ? Letters: Morrie Kuramoto.

Synopsis: Byrrah, Namor’s cousin, regards himself as entitled to the throne of Atlantis by his pure blood, whereas Namor is only a half-breed. Many years ago, he would try to best Namor in single combat for the throne but always lost because of Namor’s greater strength. But now Byrrah has a better scheme, positioning himself as the pacifist protector of the people. At a meeting of the Royal Council, Byrrah addresses those present, calling Namor a war-monger and demanding a peaceful ruler; his comments are met with great support and his name is put forward for the election….

When word comes to Prince Namor, the Sub-Mariner, of Byrrah’s remarks, he goes on television to promote himself as the sole defender of the people, calling pacifists cowards. Byrrah then challenges Namor to single combat; Lady Dorma and Lord Vashti plead with Namor not to fight, suggesting trickery on Byrrah’s part, but Namor must meet the challenge….

Namor and Byrrah meet in the arena but Byrrah has taken advantage of a loophole in the rules to hide weapons around the arena, attacking Namor with explosives and a battle lance. Namor responds by employing an eel to disarm his foe. But Byrrah has coated a sawfish with a chemical that, when the fish scrapes Namor, the hero grows ever weaker, and Byrrah is able to overpower him to win the contest. Byrrah is hailed as victor and considered a shoo-in for the next day’s election. Namor mopes and despairs over his kingdom….

Tales to Astonish #90 Review by (July 30, 2024)
First time the Hulk is KOed by an opponent.

Review and Additinal Comments by Peter Silvestro

Review: And now we meet…the Abomination! One of Hulk’s all-time greatest enemies makes his debut by punching Hulk’s lights out! He’s stronger than Hulk and smarter than Hulk and will contribute to many more years of exciting Gamma-action! And we won’t ask why the Stranger, one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe, never considered that Hulk changing back to Banner would break the hypnotic spell—or that his hypnotic spell could so easily be broken. And when Banner turns back to Hulk, the spell does not return. Stranger must be having a lazy day if he didn’t see any of this coming. Meanwhile, for something that no one could see coming, it’s Bruce’s suicidal mood when he realizes what the Stranger was trying to make him do; I assume he has some reason for believing that an extra large dose of Gamma would kill him instead of making him the Super-Hulk but I’m no scientist. Wait and see….

As for Subby, he is caught up in an unusual method of choosing leaders, which seems to select rulers by heredity (it is called a monarchy, after all), but also holding elections, while candidates seem to be selected by combat. I’m sure they have it all written down somewhere and perhaps even have regularly scheduled elections. Anyway, Byrrah seems like a cool bad guy, a shady politician and schemer, who has a blond handlebar mustache and wears a helmet bearing an Iron Cross. And it seems like over half of the Subby story is word balloons full of chatter so maybe politics is the same all over.

Comments: Hulk story: Part two of three parts. First appearance/origin of the Abomination. Blonsky mentions the Bamboo Curtain, a nickname for Red China, parallelling the Iron Curtain for the Soviet Union and its allies.

Subby story: Part one of two parts. The cover picture of Byrrah was used for his Marvel Value Stamp. Byrrah made his first appearance in SUB-MARINER COMICS #35 in 1954; this is his first appearance in the Silver Age. Letterer Morrie Kuramoto credited as Sherigail.
