Tales to Astonish #92 Review by (August 20, 2024)

Review: Very offbeat issue features a manhunt for the Hulk which takes us away from the usual stomping grounds of Army base and surrounding desert. A quick montage of searchers gives way to a spooky old apartment where Bruce Banner is doing mad scientist things. Then he Hulks out and, in a very unusual sequence, Hulk fights a powerful but unseen enemy. The last page reveal shows us the Silver Surfer, promising more excitement next time. This issue was a series of cool scenes stitched together, building up to a reveal and was very effective.

So, Subby is miffed at the surface world again, hanging over from his most recent Avengers appearance and his rage carries through the issue. So when a generic radioactive monster shows up, Subby just has to pick a fight with IT (typography important here), setting up a big battle for next issue. The issue is better than it sounds and I’m not sure why as it is just a compilation of cliches but it’s fun.

Comments: Hulk story: Part one of two parts. The first Silver Surfer story not to be drawn by Jack Kirby; so sayeth the Marvel Database. It’s also the Surfer’s first appearance outside of FANTASTIC FOUR where he has ten appearances by this time. That appears to be President Lyndon Johnson asking for help in locating Hulk on page two but it doesn’t say so expressly.

Subby story: Part one of two parts. Story follows Subby’s appearance in AVENGERS #40. The editors apologize for not having the latest blueprints of Atlantis to copy from. Dan Adkins claims credit for redrawing Subby on the cover.
