Story Name:

He Who Strikes The Silver Surfer

Synopsis

Tales to Astonish #93 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars
Hulk's immense strength seems no match for the Silver Surfer's cosmic powers. Hulk is finally stunned by a blow from the Silver's surfboard.

Police arrive to the scene and hold the Hulk at bay using fire weaponry, as they wait for the US Army to arrive.

Empathizing with the Hulk's plight, the Surfer swoops down and rescues him from the police.

Hulk seizes the surfboard in an attempt to journey to the stars, but he is unable to control it and the Surfer knocks him unconscious with an energy blast.

The Surfer reads Hulk's mind and discovers the truth about Bruce Banner's tragedy. So he decides to cure Banner of his gamma-induced affliction. But Hulk awakens and, thinking the Surfer is attacking him, strikes back. Offended, the Silver Surfer flies off, leaving the Hulk to his fate.

Synopsis: Prince Namor, the Sub-Mariner, is fighting the radioactive monster called IT, under the mistaken idea that it’s some sort of android super-weapon unleashed by the US submarine firing on them. An undersea cliff is blown up and the rubble buries IT as Namor swims away—but the creature soon fights his way out from under the massive pile of rocks. As Namor starts punching his way into the sub, IT attacks him and the fight continues on the sub’s deck. Namor finds IT to be stronger than he thought and he is weakening under its blows. The monster leaps at Namor who ducks, sending IT smashing through the sub’s tower. This is when the Navy men discover that it was this monster, not Namor, who was the real radioactive threat. The sub surfaces to effect repairs and seal off the area with the monster’s corpse….

Meanwhile, a weakened Namor swims his way home to Atlantis where he undergoes treatment in the Medi-Ray Chamber. Lady Dorma comforts him and he, still thinking that IT was a weapon of the US Navy, vows to declare war on the surface world once he has recovered….

Tales to Astonish #93 Review by (September 10, 2024)

Review: Wow! Only two issues after Hulk battles his opposite number in the Abomination, he faces an even stronger foe: the Silver Surfer. And Hulk is the bad guy! Hulk and the Surfer fight over nothing! Hulk smacks the Surfer, Surfer responds. Hulk smacks Surfer, Surfer responds differently. Hulk smacks Surfer, Surfer tries another tack. Hulk smacks Surfer, Surfer finally gets fed up and leaves. So Hulk has been the bad guy and we’re expected to pity him when even the Silver Surfer, Marvel’s premiere sensitive guy, has run out of sympathy.

And double wow! Subby meets his match in IT, another generic mindless monster with super-strength and that’s about it. But it’s pretty thrilling while it lasts.

Comments: Hulk story: First appearance of the Silver Surfer in a Hulk comic. Part one of two parts.

Subby story: Part two of two parts. IT’s act of strength is surprisingly similar to the classic moment from AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #33.
