Story #2

It Walks Like a Man!

Synopsis

By Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Credits: Writer: Stan Lee. Pencils: Dan Adkins. Inks: Dan Adkins. Colors: ? Letters: Art Simek.

Synopsis: Prince Namor, the Sub-Mariner, and Lady Dorma discover a metal cannister ejected from a passing submarine; his first impulse is to destroy the ship but Dorma advises him to be merciful as it may just be trash. Namor examines it and realizes the can contains radioactive waste. Namor carries it leagues away and tosses it into the forbidden Cavern of Darkness, then they head home. But beneath the cavern is a long-forgotten creature that, exposed to the radiation, grows in size, strength, and hatred….

Seeking out victims, IT comes upon a mid-ocean radar-warning station. The crew detects a something large and radioactive coming their way. IT enters the minefield beneath the station and detonates a mine; the station crew assumes whatever it was has been killed. But IT attacks the pillars supporting the station and succeeds in toppling it, though not before the crew can abandon the base and head for safety….

Meanwhile, Namor and Dorma return to Atlantis where Namor debates within himself how to respond to the surface dwellers. Dorma counsels him not to be too hostile. So Namor assembles a squadron of soldiers to go to the surface world and ask them to stop trespassing over his territory. The delegation sets out but encounters IT which attacks them; one escapes to inform Namor of the incident. Namor, assuming the monster belongs to the surface dwellers, swims out in anger to confront the enemy….

Meanwhile, an American submarine passing over detects IT and assumes that it is the Sub-Mariner, having inexplicably turned radioactive and responsible for the destruction of the radar station. The captain orders torpedoes to be fired. Then Namor arrives and, assuming that IT is some sort of android super-weapon released by the sub, attacks IT, just as the sub fires its torpedoes….

Tales to Astonish #92 Review by (August 20, 2024)

Review: Very offbeat issue features a manhunt for the Hulk which takes us away from the usual stomping grounds of Army base and surrounding desert. A quick montage of searchers gives way to a spooky old apartment where Bruce Banner is doing mad scientist things. Then he Hulks out and, in a very unusual sequence, Hulk fights a powerful but unseen enemy. The last page reveal shows us the Silver Surfer, promising more excitement next time. This issue was a series of cool scenes stitched together, building up to a reveal and was very effective.

So, Subby is miffed at the surface world again, hanging over from his most recent Avengers appearance and his rage carries through the issue. So when a generic radioactive monster shows up, Subby just has to pick a fight with IT (typography important here), setting up a big battle for next issue. The issue is better than it sounds and I’m not sure why as it is just a compilation of cliches but it’s fun.

Comments: Hulk story: Part one of two parts. The first Silver Surfer story not to be drawn by Jack Kirby; so sayeth the Marvel Database. It’s also the Surfer’s first appearance outside of FANTASTIC FOUR where he has ten appearances by this time. That appears to be President Lyndon Johnson asking for help in locating Hulk on page two but it doesn’t say so expressly.

Subby story: Part one of two parts. Story follows Subby’s appearance in AVENGERS #40. The editors apologize for not having the latest blueprints of Atlantis to copy from. Dan Adkins claims credit for redrawing Subby on the cover.
