Rating: 4 stars

Hulk and Red Harpy are hiding in a Manhattan hotel suite; she wants to reconcile but Joe Fixit, whose personality inhabits big green Hulk, is confused. Harpy returns to her Betty form and explains that Bruce always felt guilty over the Gamma affecting Betty but Joe saw Betty beneath any form. Joe explains that Bruce isn’t hiding, he is trapped Below by the Leader, and also admits that he left Bruce behind when he escaped. This enrages Betty who becomes Red Harpy again and screams at him….

In the next room, Jen Walters and Jackie McGee ignore the noise from the bedroom and talk about their plans. Jen doesn’t have any and Jackie, now unemployed, just wants to see the story through. Jen has no better advice, changing into She-Hulk….

And then Thing picks up a message from Jen that Hulk is under control while she plans her next move. What she doesn’t know is that numerous heroes are gathered at the Baxter Building, waiting for their next move too….

Hulk tries to apologize for leaving Bruce behind and Red denounces him for his selfish side, which had always neglected and mistrusted her. He tells her he’s done hiding and that he loves her. He wants to be a better person for her…but she’s already gone, flown out of the window. Hulk goes to the next room and tells Jackie and She-Hulk that it’s time to find Bruce….

Immortal Hulk #48 Review by (July 7, 2021)

Review: “You make me want to be a better man.” It worked for Jack Nicholson in AS GOOD AS IT GETS but not for Hulk. Bruce and Betty Banner have one of the worst marriages in the Marvel Universe: while many couples have emotional baggage they keep having to deal with, the Banners’ baggage consists of multiple personalities for both of them, some of which are real monsters. So, it’s no surprise that they can’t work anything out here. But that’s the bulk of the issue as the whole Place Below plot will (presumably) pick up next issue to set up the climactic #50! And the cover, with humanized Joe Fixit trying to woo Red Harpy perched on a streetlight by bringing her flowers while Hulk mopes, is a comedy classic! See ya in thirty!

Comments: Assembled heroes include Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Blade, all of the Fantastic Four, Hulkling, Ghost Rider and a couple I don’t recognize, possibly Franklin and Valeria Richards. Issue includes a one-page tribute to the late comic artist John Paul Leon (1972-2021) and another for late comics writer David Anthony Kraft (1952-2021). The inkers are Ruy Jose and Belardino Brabo.
