Immortal Hulk #49 Review by (August 4, 2021)

Review: Very unusual issue, largely for its form: each page is a single large illustration, with narration by Jackie McGee printed down one side. And her narration consists of deep musings on the Hulk’s self-image and his contrast with the FF, where a similar process created heroes while the Hulk became a monster. Again, Al Ewing’s writing is so complex that it’s nigh impossible to summarize so I’ll leave you with what I’ve got. And next month is the big finish….

Comments: Title comes from the sign over the entrance to Hell in Dante’s Inferno: “Abandon hope, all ye who enter here.” Assembled Avengers: Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Hawkeye, Nova, War Machine, Vision, and Blade. The inkers are Ruy Jose and Belardino Brabo.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Immortal Hulk #49 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Planning to go to the Place Below to rescue Bruce, Hulk heads for the Baxter Building, accompanied by She-Hulk and Jackie McGee. On arrival they find the assembled Avengers and almost instantly a fight breaks out, the Hulk holding his own against the heroes. Then the Fantastic Four enter and they break up the battle. As the Thing tries to reassure Hulk, they take him to the Forever Gate which will scan Hulk and determine where he is to go. The machine shows Hulk a vision of the family he could have had with Betty, Rick, and even General Ross, had things been different. The Gate opens and Hulk steps through…and Jackie goes with him. Hulk’s body distorts in the flow, dividing into red and green versions as they head for their destination….
