A Game of Consequences

Synopsis

Immortal Hulk #42 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Bruce Banner is still trapped Below by the Leader….

On the Gamma Flight station, Henry Peter Gyrich berates the team (Puck, Titania, Doc Samson) over their failure to capture Hulk, threatening the absent Absorbing Man with arrest if he does not return soon. But when Gyrich starts talking about torturing Doc Samson for information, Doc (in Sasquatch’s body) threatens to cut a hole in the space station wall with his nails. Gyrich, unwilling to call his bluff, allows them to go then sends for the back-up team….

A reorganization at the Arizona Herald means Jackie McGee is busted to writing listicles for the paper with a pay cut. Returning home, she is surprised to find Dr. Charlene McGowan there, having translocated in the apartment. McGowan is looking for Gamma mutates and reveals that Jackie is one. McGowan tells her she has been Gamma since Georgetown. Jackie is skeptical—until she starts seeing bizarre creatures before her….

Bruce is hooked up to a biological machine which, according to the Leader, should be circulating a flow of Gamma energy from the other Hulks down to where they are, in the presence of the One Below All. The ghost of Brian Banner tells him that the missing bond is between Leader and the One—which then absorbs him, endowing him with great power….

On the space station, Henry Peter Gyrich addresses his new team, giving them free rein to do whatever they have to to capture the Hulk—the U-Foes (Vector, Vapor, X-Ray, Ironclad)….

Review / Commentaries

Immortal Hulk #42 Review by (January 13, 2021)

Review: Multiple art teams set this issue apart from the rest. And a number of new subplots are raised: Gamma Flight versus Henry Peter Gyrich. Jackie is a Gamma mutate. The U-Foes are on the scene. The Leader has the power of the One Below All. And through it all—Hulk does not appear. Closest we get is Bruce Banner. Curiouser and curiouser.

Comments: The cover is a tribute to Hieronymus Bosch’s painting of Hell. The U-Foes have been enemies of Hulk since INCREDIBLE HULK #254 in 1980. The issue features four sequences with three creative teams. Leader sequence: Alex Lins, art/Chris O’Halloran, colors. Gamma Flight sequence: Adam Gorham, art/Chris O’Halloran, colors. Jackie McGee sequence: Rachael Stott, art/Chris O’Halloran, colors. U-Foes sequence: Joe Bennett and Ruy Jose, art/Paul Mounts, colors. Issue includes a one-page tribute to Mike Hobson (1936-2020), longtime Marvel publisher.
