Immortal Hulk #38 Review by (October 14, 2020)

Review: To be honest, I’ve long since lost track of which Hulk is in whose body and who is occupying the Mindscape and who is in the Below-Place and where Brian Banner is currently and what happened to the real Rick Jones. So, I’m just going to wing it: this issue is as good as the series has been up till now. Someday, I may reread these in one sitting and take notes and perhaps alter these reviews but today is not that day. And now I have to go write up the latest Captain America issue. See you next time.

Comments: Issue is bannered with a memorial to the late Chadwick Boseman and there is a two-page tribute inside by Ta-Nehisi Coates and a portrait by Brian Stelfreeze. Ruy Jose and Belardino Brabo collaborated on the inks.

Immortal Hulk #38 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Three-year-old Bruce Banner was looking through an illustrated edition of Paradise Lost when his father Brian became paranoid about him and refused to let his mother take him away, “A boy needs his father!”

Devil Hulk, now locked up in the Hulk’s Mindscape, recalls asking little Bruce to be let out to deal with Brian but Bruce wouldn’t….

Now in the Mindscape, the Leader is occupying the body of World Breaker Hulk (the strongest there is) and has Savage Hulk a prisoner. He also has Bruce Banner and Joe Fixit locked up. In the Below-Place, Leader, with the imprisoned Doc Samson is juggling possession of several bodies. Dr Charlene McGowan has rescued the horribly distorted Rick Jones, unaware he is controlled by the Leader, and then Del Frye, the first victim, also controlled by the Leader, shows up and they confront McGowan. But Samson clout the Leader in the head, incapacitating Rick and Frye, allowing McGowan to hit the translocator and send Jones and Frye elsewhere. Leader grabs Bruce and heads for the Green Door to give him to his father but someone else shows up: Devil Hulk. And he is mad at Leader for hurting Bruce….
