Story Name:

The Son of Thor

Synopsis

Immortal Thor #17 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Thor, turned to stone and broken to pieces by his enemies, is floating in a dark and desolate afterlife. His former alter ego Dr. Donald Blake greets him; Blake is blind from his judgment and bitter over his last encounters with Thor. His current desire is to see Thor die and whether that means his (Blake’s) freedom or his death doesn’t matter. He summons a horde of creatures of Vidblainn to fight and kill Thor. As Thor battles the monsters…

…back on Earth, the sections of his broken body rejoin, to the surprise of the four villains assembled against him. Grey Gargoyle is frightened of having killed Thor, Cobra curious, Mister Hyde triumphant, and Radioactive Man wary. When reassembled, the petrifying spell wears off and Thor the All-Father is alive and well once more. He challenges them, pointing out their foolishness in having confronted him, especially in the presence of a walking bomb (Radioactive Man). Thor clobbers Hyde and faces the others. Cobra contacts their boss and they are teleported away. Amora the Enchantress steps out of the shadows, revealing that it was her magic that kept Thor alive and now she want a reward: her dead son restored. Thor can no longer deny her so they return to Asgard….

Meanwhile, the four bad guys return to their employer, Dario Agger, disappointed that their scheme failed. Radioactive Man points out to the others that they did succeed in their primary objective: to prevent Thor from repairing his reputation on Earth. Agger notes that Amora is the new CEO of Roxxon which is at war with Iron Man so they can take advantage of that. Besides, they will have their rematch but this time Thor will come to them….

Thor’s brother Ullr creates the secret flame of Asgardian magic, to return a dead one to life. Sif warns that the whole matter is a bad idea but Thor believes Aamora deserves to see Iric in the flesh. But Thor also notes that Amora is no longer mentioning her son’s name and he is wary of bringing back Ove, her son with Namor from an alternate future, for revenge against Captain Marvel. Amora rejects the idea, insisting she would not want a grown man from a possible future over a babe she held in her arms. So she cuts her hand and drips blood into the flames while chanting the spell. A flash of light and her son stands before them: not Iric or Ove but a son from a dark age whose memory was erased by Thor. It is Magni, son of Thor….

Review / Commentaries

Immortal Thor #17 Review by (November 20, 2024)

Review: Yes, Al Ewing’s practice of putting the title at the end of the issue spoils the big surprise when put at the beginning of the story by catalogers and chroniclers of comics. We’ll deal with that later as it’s not the first time. So…Thor survives being smashed into stone chunks, thanks to Amora who still wants her son back. Thor agrees, mainly out of gratitude and it’s a new figure showing up on the last page with the title identifying him. Nice accessible issue also brings back a bitter Don Blake and saves the four 1960s villains for a drubbing next issue.

Comments: Thor’s encounter with an angry and possibly divine Don Blake was in THOR (2020) #9-14; he was bonded to a symbiote in #28-29. Ullr the Wanderer was introduced in issue #11 of this series. Namor and Amora have a son, Ove, in an alternate timeline, as seen in CAPTAIN MARVEL (2019) #23-26, 30. No word yet on whether this is the Magni Thorson from THOR (1998) #68-79. Issue includes a tribute to the late John Cassaday, cover artist for CAPTAIN AMERICA (2002) and several other things, notably PLANETARY for WildStorm.
