The End of All Songs

Synopsis

Immortal Thor #12 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 3.5 stars

Tyr is possessed by Oblivion. The rest of Odin’s children have been sent into opposite directions to find him….

The team consisting of Thor, Angela, Loki, and Balder emerge from a Skinner Box onto an unknown landscape. They encounter the giant Elder God Tiwaz who holds the rune that bears his name and is also the rune for Tyr….

Back in the In-Between, Hermod has found Tyr inside a similar box, he offers to help but Tyr, channeling nothingness, causes Hermod to vanish from all reality. Outside the box, the others, Vidar with Laussa, Honir, Bragi, and Ullr the Wanderer, are aware of what has happened to their brother. Tyr emerges from the box and threatens them all with a like fate….

Thor’s group becomes aware of Hermod’s death though Bragi’s link to Loki. Tiwaz gives himself a lengthy introduction and reveals he is the great-grandfather to Thor, thus to them all. Tiwaz also reveals that the rune he holds will cure Tyr, if Thor win it in a contest of riddles….

At the other end, the possessed Tyr demands to be given Laussa; Vidar holds her forth…and she spits Surtur’s flames all over Tyr. Honir begins spraying Tyr with arrows….

Thor tries to fight Tiwaz by hurling Mjolnir at him. Tiwaz stops it in midair, not touching it. He admires the craftsmanship that went into it and returns it to its wielder. So Thor offers a riddle: “What is big, red, and eats rocks?” Tiwaz ponders the query and confesses he does not know. Thor’s answer: “A big red rock-eater.” Tiwaz is pleased and gives Thor the rune, asking him where he learned the riddle. At his father’s knee, he says and they are returned to the others, with Tiwaz giving Loki the warning, “You, I’ll meet again.”

Back with the others, Thor hurls the rune at Tyr and Oblivion is driven out of him. As they prepare to say their goodbyes, Thor asks Ullr if he wants his hall back. Ullr responds with a dark prophecy of Thor’s impending death…..

Review / Commentaries

Immortal Thor #12 Review by (June 19, 2024)

Review: A nice issue is marred by a multitude of vaguely defined characters, children of Odin whom we did not know about until the previous issue, which I’ve had to keep open to recognize them in this conclusion to the tale. And so we really didn’t need all of them. The disappointment arrives on the last page with Ullr’s prophecy: Thor is going to die! There is a warning of Thor’s impending death every two years in the comics, why should this one be taken any more seriously? But Tiwaz was cool.

Comments: Tiwaz, also known as Buri, is the first Aesir, grandfather of Odin, great-grandfather of Thor. Oblivion has just been seen in G.O.D.S. Issue includes a tribute to the late Native American artist Jeffrey Veregge, who incorporated comic book heroes into his art and created some covers for Marvel.
