Synopsis

Incredible Hulk, The (1968 series) #423 synopsis by reviewer Julio MM
Rating: 5 stars

Hulk #423 concludes the “Myth Conceptions” arc with a surreal descent into death and redemption.

After being devoured by the Hoarfen, Hulk and Agamemnon awaken in Niffelheim, the Asgardian realm of the dead. They are greeted by Hela, queen of death, who informs them that escape is impossible. But Agamemnon, strangely familiar with the terrain, leads Hulk across the bleak, frozen expanse in search of a way out.

Their journey is interrupted when they activate a light source, triggering an ambush by an army of undead warriors. Hulk fights valiantly, but the sheer number of enemies begins to overwhelm him. As the battle intensifies, Bruce Banner feels his grip on control slipping, the Savage Hulk threatening to resurface.

In a desperate gambit, Agamemnon pleads with Hela for release. She relents—but only on the condition that Agamemnon return to her in time. With her permission, the two are cast back into the mortal plane, reappearing inside the Hoarfen’s mouth. Hulk shatters the beast’s jaw from within, forcing it to spit them out and flee in defeat.

Thor—still the Roger Norvell incarnation—intervenes, sending Hulk, Betty Ross, Agamemnon, and the Pantheon back to Earth. Before parting, he vows vengeance against Siingard for his betrayal.

Back at the Mount, Agamemnon awaits formal indictment for his crimes against his descendants.

The issue blends mythic grandeur with psychological tension, offering a rare glimpse of Hulk’s vulnerability in the face of cosmic forces and moral ambiguity.
