Invincible Iron Man #68 Review by (February 20, 2021)
Comments: The last time Tony Stark was in hiding with a disguise and a fake name was issues #42-45. Tony refers to John Ashcroft who was US Attorney General at the time. The phrase “What’s the frequency Kenneth?” appears as a graffito; it’s a reference to a 1990s song by R.E.M., inspired by a bizarre incident involving an assault on TV news anchor Dan Rather. Look it up if you don’t believe me.

Review: So, Iron Man is a fugitive again and there’s some weepy-weepy stuff with Pepper and Happy. This time, however, it’s Pepper who has betrayed Tony by giving the fail-safe device to Agent Streich and Tony misinterprets her motive as one of revenge for revealing her secret miscarriage to Happy. Blond and beardless Tony had better stay away from meeting with Steve Rogers and Clint Barton out of costume or they will be indistinguishable to all but the nerdiest readers. But Tony is actually being a clever secret agent when he questions Mr. Yu but, as he recognizes, he is a dumb superhero in wanting to confront Temugin right away—but that makes for exciting comic books!

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Invincible Iron Man #68 Synopsis by Julio Molina-Muscara
Pepper Potts hands F.B.I. Agent Neil Streich a failsafe that can turn the Iron Man armor defenseless. And while weeping in the hospital at her husband's side, Happy Hogan wakes up.

Iron Man brings the man he took from the Kang-Ho Seok residence to a rooftop, and begins to torture him to get information since that man is the traitor who framed the North Koreans. But an implant in his skull goes off, killing him.

The armor detects the source of the deadly transmission was Manhattan. Tony makes changes to his armor so he can operate it without the helmet, and goes to Manhattan to find Temugin. After shaving, and dieing his hair blond, Tony walks the streets looking for the lair of the Mandarin's son, but runs into Agent Streich who doesn't recognize him, and almost captures him.

A little later, Tony meets Mr. Yu, a Temugin man who hired Senka Grdic to kill Tony... But Yu no longer wants to work for Temugin since he's being denied his goal: to meet Temugin in person. For 20 million, he is willing to give Stark information to find Temugin. Tony tricks Yu into grabbing a device that knocks him out, finds information to locate Temugin, and informs the F.B.I. of Yu's whereabouts.

Finally, Iron Man crashes into the lair of Temugin, who seems to have enhanced martial art powers, and feels ready to kill Tony Stark.
