Story Name:

Manhunt: Part One

Synopsis

Invincible Iron Man (1998 series) #65 synopsis by Julio M2
Rating: 3 stars
Using Stark tech (a top secret weapon designed years ago  by Tony Stark for the U.S. Military, unapproved for being too expensive, and for having a design flaw), an unidentified person attacks and nearly destroys the Chinese Embassy in Washington D.C., causing hundreds of casualties, and wounded. Iron Man assists in the rescue.

Then Tony starts investigating who is behind the attack; it could be a known enemy, or someone from the U.S. Government, or from his own company. He first speaks with Nick Fury from S.H.I.E.L.D. Then he chats with Pepper Potts (troubled by her miscarriage, something her husband Happy Hogan doesn't know about, and about her declining marriage.)

Meanwhile, Happy drowns his sorrows in alcohol. Tony finds him in a tavern, and asks him to be sober since he needs his help. Happy blames Tony for his ruined marriage since he believes there's something going on between Tony and Pepper. Tony finally tells Happy that Pepper was pregnant, and when Happy hits Tony in the face, he gets a shot that was meant for Tony.

Review / Commentaries

Invincible Iron Man (1998 series) #65 Review by (February 12, 2021)
Comments: First appearance of FBI Agent Neil Streich, whose participation is limited to this five-issue story arc. Tony Stark had once been named People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive. Friday appears in the guise of a stereotypical secretary.

Review: So after a brief break wherein Iron Man saves the world from Thor, we’re back to watching Tony Stark’s life fall apart, with the exception of getting more (explicit) sexy time from Rumiko, which really doesn’t contribute to forming a lasting stable relationship in the long run. Anyway, the arc gets off to a nice start with a terrorist act, a stolen superweapon, and Tony spilling the beans about Pepper’s miscarriage—and then it ends with our heroes being shot. Should be good and Mike Grell is ramping up the sex and violence factor but not to Max levels. Yeah, this could seem like exploitation but he’s also providing fine stories and art to go with them. We’ll see.
