Review / Commentaries

Invincible Iron Man (1998 series) #75 Review by (March 27, 2021)
Comments: Avengers cameos are Captain America, Black Panther, Scarlet Witch, Warbird, Vision plus Henry Peter Gyrich. Termite faced Iron Man in issues #189-190; competitor Simon Gilbert appeared in vol. 1 issues #45-48 and 59; Senator Byrd appeared frequently in the TALES OF SUSPENSE and early volume 1 era. President Bill Clinton named William Cohen, a Republican Senator, as his Secretary of Defense in 1997, six years before this issue. There is a reference to Vice President Dick Cheney’s history of heart trouble; this is accurate. There is a joke about reporter Christine Everhart being named after an evil car; the reference is to the Stephen King novel/movie CHRISTINE. There is also a joke reference to “nattering nabobs,” a favorite insult of the media by Vice President Spiro Agnew in the Nixon administration, specifically “nattering nabobs of negativism.” Friday appears as a cook.

Review: Tony’s political battle continues as he has to be evasive about his own political leanings but the story starts off with an action scene, which is nice. The big climactic controversy is about Tony’s lying about being Iron Man, an ethical issue which, literally, no other politician in US history has ever faced. So even when comics are trying to be relevant, they still have to come up with well-thought-out solutions to imaginary questions. Ha, more to come!
