Invincible Iron Man #61 Review by (January 22, 2021)
Comments: Title is a play on the phrase “a knight in shining armor.” Friday appears as Major Kong from DR STRANGELOVE, the guy who rode the atom bomb to the ground.

Review: Man, that polarity is really something! Reversing it can actually kill someone! That never happened to Doctor Who when he reversed polarity in the TARDIS! And like Doctor Who, the scientific explanations for everything don’t always make sense. Herein, Tony doesn’t understand about the workings and paradoxes involved, which is okay. But we do get a dragon battle, despite the fact that said dragon should have killed them in their sleep and definitely would have roasted them before Tony got his armor on, but we’ll overlook that. It’s a story with a dragon, a sorceress, and time travel in it; how seriously should we take it? And the Sword in the Stone gag at the end is just icing on the cake.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Invincible Iron Man #61 Synopsis by T Vernon
Happy Hogan returns to Stark Enterprises and Pepper Potts fills him in on Tony Stark’s trip to the past, showing him the Iron Man helmet with a skull inside….

A millennium ago: Tony and Sir Brann are awakened by a dragon in their cave, dispatched by the sorceress Aislinn now that she and her other half, Dr. Ellen Mallory, are reunited, restoring to her all the power of the Earth Mother. Tony, using his armor, pries apart two of the scales protecting its breast and Brann drives the King’s sword in. The dragon dies and Aislinn feels the pain. Tony reverses the polarity on his armor, making it work again but doesn’t do the helmet. Tony and Brann head to the stone circle where he first arrived as the time of automatic return is nearing—and they are confronted by Aislinn and her troops. There is a brief battle, the King’s sword becomes stuck in a rock and Brann is captured so Tony surrenders. He hands his armor over to the sorceress, who is planning to conquer the world but first traveling to the future to destroy Tony’s time machine by leaving an explosive crystal. As the machine takes her back to the future, the differences in polarity ensure that her body heads to the 21st century but her head remains. Her consort Emile kisses her head goodbye as he buries it under a cairn, helmet and all, and takes his leave. Pepper sends another, correctly polarized suit so Tony says farewell to Brann and travels back to the future where his first act is to save Pepper and Happy from Aislinn’s explosive crystal, which does wreck the time machine….

Sir Brann completes the mission, delivering King Uther Pendragon’s new sword to him. Though the sword is embedded in the stone and no one can remove it, perhaps someday someone will be able to pull the sword from the stone.
